Are there any good climbing spots not too far off (not too far off = 15 miles or less-ish)the Appalachian Trail?

The section through the White Mountains in New Hampshire runs close to a number of climbing areas, including Rumney, Whitehorse, and Cathedral.

I don't know your location, but if you're anywhere near Grayson Highlands State Park VA, it is a must for bouldering... the AT runs right through the heart of the park, and the place is littered with pristine boulders. its fantastic, and there is a page for it on this site. check it out.

I've thru-hiked the AT and remember walking by some bolted lines in the southern states(NC perhaps) and through the state parks in southern PA there was a ton of chalk and lots of undeveloped bouldering (this was back in '99). I passed some "interesting" boulders by the del water gap and then a few more boulders along the trail through all of New England. Then of course there are the white mountains.

I can say with 100% confidence that I was in no physical shape to do any sort of climbing when I hiked the trail, not to mention that most thru hikers jettison anything that is not mission critical and I would most surely put climbing shoes in that category.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you're thinking about thru-hiking

Whisky Springs in PA -- good bouldering. AT passes right through the boulders. Decent camping, and good water source just downhill (N). Pretty near a former halfway point of the trail. A few miles N of currently sign-posted halfway point.

Further south, the AT passes just next to another good crag: The Hermitage or Shaffer Rocks. This is only a few hours walk from the Mason-Dixon line. Primarily a local top-roping spot with good bouldering.
