Uh..........

Why wait a week to post a compaint on a website? Why not talk to the person swearing directly? With a Marine on hand, what are you afraid of? Do you really think making a statement on the internet will do any good?

You may have a point but waiting a week and your really screwed up facts......

The facts being that two different groups converged and then yours, those being the only on Spiney. The dog being tied up is a well known and melow one, but she like stinky stuff like douches. Maybe that was your problem with the dog?

The week later rant (as just read now) kinda makes you sound a little obsessed. I mean posting this much later? Dude, it is too late unless you just want to play your sad story and get sympathy...if you were that upset you should have said something to the dude with headphones on, who was on an 11b, not a 9, but still I agree TR and F bombs are lame but I'm not going to say anything, I don't mind swears and if you minded, since you were the only other group around you should have said something then to HIM.

Policing people you may live in the same town with but don't know very well isn't my thing, but perhaps you should get your no-swear-badge and write up some tickets. Can't give one to a tied up dog though.

John, for the record I was in the group with The Loud Guy and for the most part, I agree with your post. Everyone swears once in a while, but yes, The Loud Guy was screaming very loud and it was completely uncalled for. I can't stand loud, big groups.

Now let me mention that I never set out to climb with him, I just happened to know him and it was on my list to climb stuff where he happened to be climbing. So what you thought was one big group was actually two groups. That part of Spiney Ridge has about 8 high quality routes in a very small space, so it's very often crowded with folks.

A few points you are wrong about. First, we did do some "policing". We were yelling at him to shut up, and I told him that you can't get that obnoxious on top rope - freaked out on lead, maybe. But of course he didn't hear us - because he climbs with headphones (which I think is both unsafe and rude to your partners.)

One thing you're wrong about is "Fluffy" the dog, who was leashed and is very mellow. Not my dog, but she was not out of control. There was another dog there belonging to The Loud Guy's group which was running around off leash, but even that dog wasn't nearly as bad as many I've seen at Shelf.

There were other shenanigans you didn't even see. All in all, not a group I intend to climb with in the future.

If you don't like the line up at the break, find somewhere else to surf and quit whining...punch up or shut up

Or maybe speak up when outrageous behavior is spreading a negative cloud over what ought to be a positive experience for all participants. Infantile and vulgar displays over such inconsequential setbacks as not being able to send some route at a crag... we should hold ourselves and others to higher standards instead of tepidly stewing about some philistine "expressing himself", dude

I don't have the time to read through this thread, but I hate when the popcorn munchers, nacho crunchers, and soda slurpers sit by me in a theater when I was already positioned comfortably in my chair ; it detracts from the whole IMAX experience, and makes my eye twitch, and all.

A bit of an overreaction, don't you think?

Evidently from the horse's mouth, I shan't elaborate on weather a different body region might be a better descriptor.
Anyway, I think this is good advice. If someone is doing something so blatantly offensive at such volume with such repetition to warrant a forum thread ex post facto, why not just approach them and ask them to quit then and there? Take a little responsibility for your own good time and don't let the barbarians set the tone. Confrontation is sometimes the necessary forum for civility.

I do think so. Is it really that big of a deal that someone criticized your behavior in a public forum to justify your vitriolic response? While I agree that the OP should have said something to you on the spot, calling him a "little bitch" and telling him to f-off for posting about his experience at the crag is, in IMO, a bit ridiculous. Try not to take yourself so seriously, life's too short.

Nobody likes to be attacked in a public forum, that's why I tried to be as careful as I was with my wording and not attack anyone as an individual but condemn behavior that can threaten access. I think the point about confronting people on the spot at the time has real merit - though my initial hesitation in doing so seems to have yielded better results. The whole thing kind of grated on me over time, as well. I was careful not to say anything that I would not say to someone's face - because I believe it was justified. It would, however, be difficult to maintain civility with someone who does not seem to care how his actions impact a larger group. Climbers fighting at the crag is no better than repeatedly swearing in a fit of anger and frustration. But who hasn't felt like that at some point? We all have.

The good news, Loc, is that at some point you will learn to channel that feeling into your climbing before you fall or hang, so when you do come off you won't have that energy, anger, angst, and anxiety - but will be psyched that you gave everything you had before coming off. I wish I still cared that much still about "sending," to some degree. There is something to be said for making noise when you are at your limit and in a state of focus pushing what you think you are capable of.

Also, my apologies to Fluffy. I didn't mean to make you sound like a bad dog. Also, I missed about half of the response posts until a moment ago . . . in my initial post I stated that I am not offended by swearing. The context makes the issue.

"Fluffy" will glady accept being petted by anyone as an appology. She is a slut that way.

The only problem people at shelf are all wearing the most trendy outdoor company products and don't say anything to you at all.

Loc is harmless and the source of a lot of laughter whether it be with him or at him.

I am laughing with you Loc, I know you enough to know you're just ridiculous.

john, i'm really sorry. i don't know what else to wrote on here, u know? when i climb i'm pretty focus on one thing and that's climbing. i get into a zone, i don't notice the outside world other then what i need to focus on. sometimes it doesn't go my way and i get up set very easy. that's just me. i climb the same way on a 5.7 as a 5.13. i don't see any different. i just climb. and once again i'm sorry. if u just told when u were there i would of just listen and respect your wish. my friends tell me to stop screaming fuck when i climb all the time. and i do. i just sometime get over my head and for some reason it help me to refocus and climb more. i know that sounds lame. but that's just how i climb. peace and love...to the climbing community. and i'm sorry!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
