I'm loving the photos of Red Rock with snow, I hope to make it out there someday when that happens. Does it only happen every few years or so?

Dan, what awesome photos you just posted; thanks for sharing!!

Re: snow in Red Rock; that was a high record amount of snow in Red Rock (2 feet, I believe). The last time on record that it snowed that much was 30 years ago. I rushed out there as soon as they cleared the road, and opened the loop to cars; I didn't want to miss this rare opportunity to enjoy the beauty, as I knew the snow would melt rapidly, as soon as the sun shined, as it does in the desert. I hope it happens again, but we may have to wait another 30 years, or so. : )

Thanks for the compliments and info on snow in Red Rock. Not likely that I will encounter it unless I am really lucky then, since I would have to anticipate it and drive/fly 7 hours to get there....I'll cross my fingers.

OK, two feet is rare, but some happens every year. Red Rocks is maybe 10 deg colder than Vegas, some due to elevation, some due to lack of concrete, I'm sure. When a storm rolls though it happens. I've been snowed on there many times, including while climbing. Joseffa and I climbed Frogland in the snow once. It was 4" by the time we got back down and coming down hard.
The following photo is taken across the canyon from Magic Bus wall on a day where snow was expected, so we stayed away from multi-pitch.

Takes 3 or 4 ft. bolts I presume? How about ice screws?

Yep veritcal dirt indeed! Paul Ross put this up by pounding 8" X 3/8" nails into the dirt. Pretty wild, it's about 60'. maybe like 7-10 nails.

Whatever you do, don't pee on it after summiting, it might just erode away...
