North Eastern Wisconsin Climbers: Where are you?!

Original Post

I live in North Eastern Wisconsin/Fox Valley and I am looking for some climbers that would

A) Want to carpool to one of the nearest gyms (Adventure Rock in Milwaukee or Boulders in Madison)

B) Want to go to Governor Dodge, Devil's Lake, Taylor Falls, or Hilbilly Hollow

C) Do option B and have gear to do it

D) Have gear for top roping and want to check out a new area I have discovered but don't have gear to rapp in and check out the holds and the rock and clean it

or

E) Have a home wall they are holding out on or would be interested in putting one together. I could definitely help contribute!

Also, UW-Green Bay has a climbing wall and I'm sure we could all get together and convince them to let us use it to train in the summer, and even teach them a thing or two about climbing.

Thanks everyone!

Hey there, I'm from Green Bay and have only been climbing for about 6 months, pretty much all indoor and only climbed outdoors once this summer. I'm more than willing to climb if your up for going with someone who's pretty new to climbing. I do have all the basic skills though, belaying, tying in, etc. Let me know.

I'd be willing to hook up and do some climbs at AR or at the lake. I know I'm not exactly a "North Eastern" but, hey, . . . close enough, right?

I hear High Cliff SP on the northern end of Lake Winnebago also has some good climbing, but never been there to see it, so I can't testify on quality of rock.

I'm taking a top roping course from AR at Devil's Lake in a couple weeks, but don't personally own rope or other gear needed to set up my own routes.

Later on, we could all caravan up to Munising MI for Ice Fest in Feb 2010.

I think "good" would be an euphemistic way of describing High Cliff's rock.

I used to live in the Fox Valley, but that was back in the days of Vertical Stronghold, the climbing gym in Appleton. We had quite the crew back when the gym was open.

Sorry this doesn't really answer your questions, but it has given me an opportunity to be nostalgic for the old days.

So in other words, it sucks in the grand scheme of things, but is doable to climb there?

I climbed at Vertical Stronghold once. Wish they were still open; especially since I just got my brother and SIL involved in climbing. They live in Appleton.

I'm from Appleton and can say that I appreciate High Cliff, and there's some alright stuff there, but it is what it is. I graduate from high school at the end of next week and then I'll be busy for some time but shoot me an e-mail at mrleveil @ mtu.edu and I can give you some contact info for some other people around town.

Really? The Fox valley and Green Bay is 'north eastern Wisconsin'? For a second I got excited by this post...

...I used to be a north eastern Wisconsin climber. I know where all the secret crags are. But I'm not tellin it to no city slickers from Green Bay. ;)

Well, neither is Milwaukee. But that hasn't stopped me from posting. ;-)

Do you have to do a bit of trail blazing to get to these supposed secret crags?
And you used a double negative in your last statement, therefore you MUST tell us (including said city slickers from Green Bay) where these secret crags are! LOL!

High Cliff is a very cool place and the climbing is OK, especially if you lead everything, ground up with no pre-inspection, cleaning, etc.

I've been to High Cliff before, just never saw any climbing going on. I know it's a neat place. Never even knew climbing went on there until about two years ago when I heard someone mention it at the local climbing gym.

Hey guys, I live in Appleton and frequent High Cliff alot as it is only 15 mins away. Its prob not something worth driving up from milwaukee for but if its under an hour drive for you its worth it to get out, I've got gear if you want to give it a shot some weekend just let me know.

Cheers,

~Tony

I live in Appleton, and while there's some climbing at High Cliff, it's generally more of a bouldering spot. The cliffs at highest don't beat 40 feet. I usually make it out there after work, or on short days. Be prepared to drive west, near 39/94 for anytrhing truely decent. With winter coming soon, I'm trying to get to Sandstone Minnesota for their icefest in early Dec.

I live in La Crosse (area), just moved back from AK. Lived in Yosemite for just shy of 2 years. Have rope, rack (from 000C3-6C4 with doubles of finger and hand sizes), draws, slings, etc., willing to lead, share gas $, etc. No vehicle though. Also have basic ice gear (no screws, no double ropes). If your willing to climb, send me a PM, always willing to climb.

I hereby decree that the line of demarcation for NE Wisc. is north of Peshtigo, west to Wausau and directly north up Rt. 51 to Minocqua. Hell let's claim the UP of Michigan too cuz it really belongs to Wisconsin. Those 'Wolverines' stole it from us long ago.

now hold on

as a life long Michigan resident (until recently moving to WI) I must disagree with you there.

Michigan got the UP fair and square for going to war with Ohio over Toledo.... i think we got the better deal.

If anything the UP should be its own state... or better yet, its own country

+1. Considering the UP shares more land border with WI, and only links to lower MI by Makinac Bridge, and most yoopers cheer the Packers, the consensus remains, the UP will be included in NE WI
PS: don't take any of this too seriously, thanks.

I heard the UP wanted to become its own state and declare it's new name "Superior".

Why not? California is thinking about splitting in two, why cant Michigan? And since the UP is so cool, the name might just be appropriate.
