Steven,

I'll email (unless you don't mind phone calls after 10 pm) you with the list of items folks from Meetup and Facebook are bringing.

I think that Luis should share his near-death experience while beaning at the Fall 08 Beanfest. Those were some very unhappy NOLS students. HA!!! Luis, where are you? Tell everyone the story.

This one will go down in Beanfest history.

In my limited experience of five or six Beanfest's over the course of eight years, all climbers are welcome... provided you contribute. As RyanJ said, if you have been attending Beanfest and not contributing anything, you are doing it wrong.

Against my better judgement, I will admit that I have avoided beaning going on five or six Beanfests now! Catch me if you can...

At Fall '08, I retired at about 9:30 pm to the bed of my pickup truck. I have curtains with which I black out the windows for privacy. There I lay reading by headlamp when I heard the telltale clanging of pots and pans. They were coming. The Beaning Mob. I quickly killed the headlamp and lay there in the darkness. I heard them at the next truck over... a successful beaning. "Thanks for being a good sport", someone said.

"Good sport, my ass", I thought. I lay there, consciously slowing my breathing so as not to shake the truck. Footsteps approached. Then a knock on the window...

"Is someone in there?", a voice called. I ducked into my sleeping bag in case they had the gall to open the hatch.

Another knock, more forceful this time.

"I think someone is in there."

The truck began to rock! The clanging of pots grew to a deafening crescendo as my truck rocked side to side, like an airy pendulum gone horribly wrong.

I lay there in the darkness praying. The rocking stopped. The clanging subsided. Footsteps moved away.

I had survived another year.

Like Scott said... don't run. Hiding is your only chance.

@Matt Snider-- only been once, Grandma's beanfest. That time a carload or two of climbers from el paso roadtripped out for their first beanfest, including a couple of bros of theirs from Mexico. Can't imagine climbers wouldn't be welcome at a climbers' gathering. See ya' there, broha!

All, I tend to be a traditionalist in my prospectives; but I do really enjoy a good hard sport route these days. From my historical understanding of how the beanfest originated, the one I identify with, is that many of the originators of the fest had departed Tucson and later coordinated a gathering to meet and share their worldly and climbing experiences. There appear to be many versions to the origin but the foundation to the fest is that it is a community event that units climbers from near and afar. All are welcome in the spirit of community and climbing. The U of A Cliff Hangers climbing club use to donate a keg but I think they are no longer in existence.

Your help and attendance are greatly appreciated. My friends Tony and Kent have been helping out with the planning and the two big expenditures beer and T-shirts. Their help has been greatly appreciated. Though, we honestly do not have a clue how many are coming and what they are bringing; except for a few exceptions. Please call me at 520 795-1073 (leave a message if I don't answer) or email me directly at SW57johnson@yahoo.com to let me know what you/your party are bringing and how many people will be coming. Please use my other posts to help you with your offer of items and donations.

P.S. My first or so Beanfest experience in 1994 resulted in a tension pneumothorax during a first ascent attempted in the Little Rincons. The Halloween party and beer was better than the four days in the hospital a few days later.

Thanks, Steven

Steven - I posted on MeetUp for you - I understand that about 15 are planning on attending from my area...
Since most are new climbers - I went ahead and made mention of the need to bring stuff and Buy SHIRTS!
Hopefully this will get the ball rolling...
Cant wait - This is more important than Halloween to me!

Hey everyone,
I'm still pretty new to the S. AZ climbing community but would love to come down to BeanFest this year. I would love to be able to help out by bringing some food/cash donation for t-shirts or other stuff. So I'm going to bring down food on the list and pitch in for t-shirts with everyone. Is that cool?

I'll post an update as soon as I hear back from Steven as far as items we still need and the cost for t-shirts.

At this point, side dishes, desserts, and cash to offset the beer/shirt costs would be appreciated.

What kind of side dishes, desserts are you needing, Brigette?

Things that go with Burritos. Oh yes, sour cream, gucamole. Enchalades, tamales, carne asada/seca, chili, tortilla chips, salsa. Desserts would be good there have been few tentative offers.

Thanks!!

Hi everyone!

If you didn't get a Beanfest shirt and you want one, you're in luck! Steven is getting ready to put in another order for shirts. They will need to be prepaid and ordered by the end of day on Sunday, November 15.

If you'd like one, let me know ASAP what size, color, and sleeve length, along with an email address to which I can send a PayPal invoice.

Options are:
Sleeve length - long and short
Color - short sleeved - lime green, sand
long sleeved - gray
Size - men's and women's small-extra large

Short-sleeved are $16
Long-sleeved are $21
(both prices include $1 to cover the % that PayPal takes)

Get 'em while they're hot! Offer expires Sunday night at midnight. :)
