I think that Luis should share his near-death experience while beaning at the Fall 08 Beanfest. Those were some very unhappy NOLS students. HA!!! Luis, where are you? Tell everyone the story. |

matt snider wrote: Still wondering. Is beanfest just for S AZ. climbers,or is it open for all AZ. climbers. I am a very nice guy who would bring beans to the festival. I like to interact with people. Please someone tell me whats going on.In my limited experience of five or six Beanfest's over the course of eight years, all climbers are welcome... provided you contribute. As RyanJ said, if you have been attending Beanfest and not contributing anything, you are doing it wrong. Against my better judgement, I will admit that I have avoided beaning going on five or six Beanfests now! Catch me if you can... At Fall '08, I retired at about 9:30 pm to the bed of my pickup truck. I have curtains with which I black out the windows for privacy. There I lay reading by headlamp when I heard the telltale clanging of pots and pans. They were coming. The Beaning Mob. I quickly killed the headlamp and lay there in the darkness. I heard them at the next truck over... a successful beaning. "Thanks for being a good sport", someone said. "Good sport, my ass", I thought. I lay there, consciously slowing my breathing so as not to shake the truck. Footsteps approached. Then a knock on the window... "Is someone in there?", a voice called. I ducked into my sleeping bag in case they had the gall to open the hatch. Another knock, more forceful this time. "I think someone is in there." The truck began to rock! The clanging of pots grew to a deafening crescendo as my truck rocked side to side, like an airy pendulum gone horribly wrong. I lay there in the darkness praying. The rocking stopped. The clanging subsided. Footsteps moved away. I had survived another year. Like Scott said... don't run. Hiding is your only chance. |

@Matt Snider-- only been once, Grandma's beanfest. That time a carload or two of climbers from el paso roadtripped out for their first beanfest, including a couple of bros of theirs from Mexico. Can't imagine climbers wouldn't be welcome at a climbers' gathering. See ya' there, broha! |

All, I tend to be a traditionalist in my prospectives; but I do really enjoy a good hard sport route these days. From my historical understanding of how the beanfest originated, the one I identify with, is that many of the originators of the fest had departed Tucson and later coordinated a gathering to meet and share their worldly and climbing experiences. There appear to be many versions to the origin but the foundation to the fest is that it is a community event that units climbers from near and afar. All are welcome in the spirit of community and climbing. The U of A Cliff Hangers climbing club use to donate a keg but I think they are no longer in existence. |

Things that go with Burritos. Oh yes, sour cream, gucamole. Enchalades, tamales, carne asada/seca, chili, tortilla chips, salsa. Desserts would be good there have been few tentative offers. |
