Climbing in Red Rocks in September

I'm looking for some advice on my upcoming trip to red rocks. I have been a few times already and I absolutely love the place! The temps were always great when I went because it was early spring - but this time I'm going mid-September and it'll probably be scorching hot then... any suggestions on some good sport climbing in red rocks that is enjoyable in the summer (grades 5.12-5.13)?

Does the front corridor area in the third pullout stay reasonably cool during mid-September? I would love to work Monster Skank...

I've heard that Mt Charleston stays reasonably cool because it's at higher elevation. How are the routes there? Is there an official guidebook for that crag? I also remember a rock and ice issue last year that described a crag called Mesquite - any info?

Lastly, is it o.k. to camp at the 13 mile campground during the heat or is it worth investing in a cheap hotel room? I'm checking the temps now and it's above 80 even during the night - doesn't sound great...

As I recall the campground has zero shade so it will probably suck. Mt. Charleston has a lot of good harder routes and is worth the trip up there but I'm not sure about a guidebook. Mesquite is a town off of I-15 on the Utah-Nevada border and there are tons of new areas going up around there (but again I'm not sure where to find published info). You probably will be chasing shade at Red Rocks, Trophy Wall comes to mind for concentrated 5.12-5.13 routes - It's pretty sweet and should get shade later in the day. Red Rocks rules - have fun!

Mt. Charleston has some decent campgrounds, which could work for you if you are planning on spending a couple days or more of climbing up there anyway.

Also, it's only about a 45 minute drive to Red Rock from Charleston, in case you wanted to slip in some climbing in RR.

As far as cheap motels go, there are plenty of killer deals in Vegas in this economy. What's your idea/price range of "cheap"? Arizona Charlies (not so nice, but better than a Motel 6) is probably the cheapest that's about a 30 minute ride to RR (through traffic lights). Red Rock Casino Resort(nice rooms) is the nearest to Red Rock Canyon(5-10 minute drive). There's the Silverton Casino (25 minute drive) on Highway 160/Blue Diamond Rd. to Black Velvet Canyon/Red Rock.

I just checked some rates for September, and they are as cheap as 34.00/night if you reserve ahead of time. Silverton is pretty nice compared to your average non-casino "cheap motels." Good eats at their restaurants, and buffet, and Bass Pro Shops (if you are into that) is in the Casino.

Ditto on the Bonnie Springs. It's basically in Rocks Rocks. You can even walk to some of the climbs from the motel (I think it took us about 45 minutes or an hour to Black Velvet Canyon, but then I don't think there is much sport climbing there). Oh, and the bathtub urinel is not in their hotel room . . . it's in their restaurant :). It's a cool place, you should check it out.

Wow GiGi, that's pretty impressive. How do you find the time to grow tomatoes, climb rocks, have encounters with the murderous bat-kind, do stuff with Jon, visit casinos and watch cirque de soleil, hike about in the desert and smell the creosote, AND fold dollar bills into crazy shapes? You are quite a gal. I think the sun revolves around you. Or maybe it just revolves around you slower than it does for the rest of us.

Re: Tomatoes: John is a super handy guy. Practically every week he has projects going on. You should see this table we built together. We get a lot of things done by teamwork. If I'm just sitting around, eating a twinkie for breakfast, I'll hear him crawling in the attic, then yelling, "Sweetie, can you do me a big favor, I'm going to drill a hole in this wall, get the ladder, and pull this line out for me, will you, please?" We've been to hardware stores many times this year. ; / Anyway, I helped with the digging of the garden, staking, playing in the dirt, and harvesting (which is the most fun!), but John worked out all the logistics; put in the watering system, researched the details to create the right conditions for the plants to grow, what fertilizer/soil to get etc...etc.

Re: climbing rocks; I'm just a weekend climber, if that. My climbing slowed down when a favorite climbing partner, and one of my best friends, Mike passed away in a climbing accident, I guess I'm still not over it; my fun, outgoing group was never the same after that, and my best friend/girl climbing partner moved away. I want to get back into it, heart, and soul, and this past trip Colorado gave me that spark again; meeting, and hanging with you guys was so inspirational. John does a lot more with all the alpine climbing he does with Brett, but I'm more of a desert rat, and when he's gone, I hike, go to the ocean, and/or catch up with my non-climbing friends, and do other fun things. Although, I sense I'm going to do a lot more climbing in Red Rock, and J-Tree this fall. I can't wait! John respects my freedom, and individuality, and is not a jealous type, and trusts me, which is helpful when you have to get things done as a team. Less time fighting, more time for activities, and projects, trips, and friends! : )

As far as casinos, murderous bat encounters,and smelling creosote; It's all about time management, plus it helps that Sin City is a 24/7 city. Less sleep= more play. I feel strange when I go to towns where everything shuts down at 8pm; although I like it for a few days, I soon get restless, and crave nighttime action. John works the Cirque shows which is really cool; some of his co-workers are climbers, and they are a fun, interesting, and humorous bunch to get out with now, and then.

OMG, did I really type all that. I feel like I'm spilling my guts to a friend at a coffee shop. Well I suppose you are our friend now that we've met in person, Justin. We like you dude!
