Ad-Hoc in Rescue

A question I get asked from time to time:

"With all the trouble regarding technical rescue (like cash/cost, mis-info reporting, multiple-agency involvement, cluster-f'd rigs, & basic embarrassment) -- why can't we just call someone else to come and get us and avoid all this bullshit?"

We're talking something outside of the definition of buddy rescue. Your climbing partner and/or those in your immediate area can't help for whatever reason.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are suggesting that a specialized rescue team be formed?

If you have a cell phone and know who to call, you can and should do just that.

you want to start a kick-ass, high dollar, private, for-profit rescue company?

I can't tell if Buff just thinks at a higher level than everyone, or if he leaves out every third word to keep us guessing. :)

When someone needs a rescue from some place like say, the Lovers Leap area, they can call you direct and you won't charge? COOL!!!!!!

Yea good luck..........some ad-hoc orginization that doesn't carry beepers/cell phones.........kind of practices technical rescue........then drops you on the way out, gets sued to all corners of the earth.......and then all of them disband...

Yea I think the system as it is is just fine...

The Europeans have the best set up....

You get hurt, you cannot sue anyone....and a helicopter comes and plucks you off the side of a mountain.....

This is kinda the mindset for the discussion; is this really a good thing?

Jim is pretty much right on as to what I'm going into

this is fact:

Any member team of Mountain Rescue Association (www.mra.org) does not charge for any services rendered. Ambulances charge, fire departments charge. Helicopters charge.

Mountain Rescue Does Not. Call us, day or night, 365 days a year. For Free.

For those of us in CO you can support 'Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue' for $3 a year. dola.state.co.us/dlg/fa/sar…

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
