Hi -
Can anyone recommend a good orthopedic surgeon in the Boulder area who specializes in shoulders, and also the same for a physical therapist?

gee, guess what I did...

thanks,

Eric McCarty w/ CU Sports Medicine worked on my shoulder and it's better than new. His dad is Cleve McCarty a local climber and he grew up climbing, he was or may still be the Orthopedic guy for the CU football team. Next door to his practice is the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, I rehabbed my shoulder and both knee's with them. Both are located in the old Mapleton Hospital at the end of Mapleton Ave., I highly recommend both. Good luck, long recovery on those shoulders - but be pactient.

I did not have surgery, but I went to CU Sports Medicine and saw Dr. St. Phard for a shoulder injury due to swimming - she seemed nice - but very busy (like all doctors I suppose). She's in the same group as McCarty - while I have not had experience with him directly, I know someone who did, and it sounds like mixed reviews - good, but you should probably educate yourself on the options before you go in, just in case.

Dr Khameran Seng at Mapleton Orthopedics is a really good surgeon as well. He specializes in shoulder injuries.

I went to Dr. Parker out of Rose Medical in Denver. He was incredible to me. I had nerve damage and he helped me work through the mental struggles there. I had an anterior dislocation reduced about 2 hours after. Next he performed an anterior shoulder reconstruction. I was climbing hard again (for me) in 4 months. I did 12 pullups 40 days after the surgery (maybe not suggested) This guy is awesome...not a shoulder specialist but he is great. A friend of mine just had surgery after putting it off for 2+ years with similar results (if not better) Going for a consult, it'll be worth it.

E-
I've heard very good things about Dr. McCarty, he did some work on a climbing friend of mine and he's been very happy w/ the results.

My principle recommendation would be Dr. David Schneider only because I've seen his work first hand. (literally, I watched him do the surgery) His ortho group is Cornerstone Orthopedics (www.cornerstoneorthopedics.com) and the closest office to boulder is the Avista Campus (303.665.2603).
I have no idea who they typically use for rehab since in this instance I took care of all the post op rehabilitation.

The scenario was a shoulder dislocation that failed to respond to conservative care. Schneider did a capsular reconstruction on it to tighten up the anterior portion of the capsule. The climber has been very pleased w/ the results and she was able to start climbing at about 4months post op.
Good luck w/ the process whomever you choose, hopefully you're back out on the rock soon,
BA
