No doubt, implementing decommissioned silo's for climbing in is a great non-waste of precious space. My father in law back in NY let me climb all over (an in) his feed silo's! No crash pad needed if you're in side and have a few feet of feed under you! At one point I managed to coax him in to running water down the side of one on chains. It was great fun until the base of the column started leeching ice in to the road, and that was the end of that. Aren't there a few of old missile silo's around the FR from back during the Cold War?? Perhaps the climbing community could put these to good use?

I am planning a trip out to a missile silo. There is plenty of climbing to be had! Contact me if you want to join

It's crazy how real some of these renderings look. The people in the foreground of this shot look very realistic. And detailed, it looks like there is a backpacker on his shirt. Real dirtbags in architectural software, huh?

That church is pretty cool too. Kind of a metaphor for some.

I don't get it.

Climbing on the outside of the building? First of all, it rains and snows outside; second, it's sometimes too hot or too cold and you have to wear extra layers or sunblock; third, birds will sit and crap on some of the holds. Sounds like a lot of work to me. How are you supposed to work on your redpointing when you have to consider environmental factors and climb in anything but perfect conditions?

I think the foreground images are an additive after the rendering image was produced courtesy of Photoshop. However, I think some of the people in the middle of the image are a product of the rendering software. They are integrated into the rendered objects. Either way, its a good image. On a side note, is there anyone belaying that person way up there?? And that sure seems like a lot of slack. up rope??

But this is a great proposal. Its nice to see that they are considering a reuse and not a demo-rebuild. Not only is it a sustainable practice in terms of materials and waste quantities but it preserves the culture of the area and relates to the history of the existing silos.

So that first post was a joke... I think that was obvious.

But, as I was writing it, I started to realize how true some of those points were. It'll be a lot more work for gym employees to keep those holds, and the outside surface clean. It's already an unpopular process indoors! And in cities, pigeons will take any surface that's free to roost on--they'd often roost on the windowsill, just a foot or two from my bed in my NYC apartment, and wake me up with their cooing.

...and I noticed the guy inside seemed to be lacking a belayer, also. Oh well, the climbers themselves seem to be using good technique, at least--credit to the graphic designer/architect on getting that in there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
