What can I expect to find for grub and drink within a reasonable distance, like 20 minutes drive time? Im also willing to drive further if there is grub that shouldn't be missed while in the area. Anyone like to recommend a local beer that is good? Cheers

If my memory serves me correctly twenty minutes out of city of rocks still puts you in the middle of nowhere. Mostly very small towns with maybe 1 gas station...Might be some pretty good local diners.

Almo is about 10 minutes away and in between City or Rocks and Castle Rocks. Almo Outpost is a traditional western steak house, nothing gourmet, but good after climbing. They get a lot of climbers so they have a few beer choices. A 30-40 minute drive will put you in Burley, Idaho. There is a handful of resturants there, but I've never eaten at any of them. Twin Falls about an hour away has some really really good mexican food (Roberto's and Nine Beans are my favs), and American Falls also about an hour has Dos hermanos really good mexican as well. Beer will be expensive in Almo or Albion. Which direction are you coming from? Driving or flying? I can recommend good breweries on either side. Let me know.

The Outpost in Almo has killer steaks and pie. And a very good beer selection. We go there for dinner a couple of times each trip. Last September there was a new restaurant/diner place on the south end of town that stated it had pizza among other things. We didn't try that.

The dutch oven cheesy potatoes at the outpost are really great too!

The rootbeer floats are good at The Outpost, after a hot day......and when in the area I always try to down a few Zonker Stouts....though not really a local beer, (Jackson?). Local if your coming from Jersey I guess.....

When heading toward the Outpost, but before you get there, there is a gas station/deli on the right that serves up great sandwiches, has an even better beer selection than the outpost, and is run by a really wonderful and friendly couple. My partner and I were snowed out of the City in June 2yrs ago and drank ourselves silly over the course of two days there.

20 minutes from the City and you find yourself in the country. If you are feeling spry you will more than likely find some fresh beef to rustle up and a trough of all you can drink suds. Of course if you are more of the vegetarian type there are some fields of greens to be had as well. Probably have to share with the locals though. As for a local beer - root beer.

the closest spot to the City of Rocks is called Rock City and they serve great fresh pizza and have a large selection of beer.

Just look for it on your right about 100 yards past where the dirt road turn to pavement coming out of the City

In early season, the Outpost has limited hours. This time last year they were not open for breakfast or lunch.

The Pizza place had better hours, and reasonably good pizza, but I'd still be ready to cook your own food when the restaurants aren't open.

They were building new commercial space next to the Outpost...should be open by now...don't know what was going in there.

If I remember correctly there's almost nothing anywhere near the City. I do remember that outpost but didn't go there. It would do you well to bring some good camp food and beers though. I remember the campsites being pretty damn sweet there.

Last time I was at the City was at the end of April a number of years ago and it snowed. A lot. Pretty much every climber bailed and we tried to stick it out. Spent a lot of time at the Almo Outpost, drinking beer and eating steak. Left without getting much climbing in after a couple of days.

That's a good little place to spend some time, especially when you don't want to sit in your tent freezing your ass off.

I'm headed to the city in a couple of weeks- hopefully the weather will be better this time.

My favorite beer from Salt Lake City is from the Wasatch Brewery and is called the devastator. In fact I think It's my favorite beer from Utah. It's a German style double bock that is 8% alchohol. Other than that a lot of the beer on the Utah side isn't that great. As in Utah beer must be 4% or below to be sold in the grocery store. But any liquor store will have real beer. But I just talked to my friend tonight who grew up in southern Idaho, is a great climber, and worked at City of Rocks for 3 summers, and he said he thinks the new pizza place the above people mentioned has one of the best beer selections in south eastern Idaho. Another somewhat local brewing company that you will find beer from is the Grand Teton Brewing Company out of Victor, ID. I really like their sweet grass IPA. Good luck, and have fun at the City.
