I he didn't climb our guidebooks would be half the size , so fuck yeah he should be sponsored for life by many climbing companies and get paid like a football player ...

Kor should be paid a stipend for life for his lifetime of routes he established for all of us to enjoy.

As I clipped the ancient bolts on the Kor roof on Washington Tower's South Face, I marveled that anyone could swing a hammer that far out, let alone aim it at the right place and hit hard enough to chip granite. Yeah, he's 6'4", but still.

He should get royalties every time someone climbs his routes.

EDIT: Washington COLUMN I mean.

In comparison to Layton, we are shriveled dicks. I hope he makes $14 million today.

The crazy thing is he did that with two bolts... I think when we did it there were 4... Must have been a bit two run out - LOL - I know I aided that bolt ladder with stirrups LOL and coming over the lip was a inspirational ordeal... Kor's the man!

Hey now, he did own some cams. I've got one of them on my shelf, his initials personally stamped on it....it's sweet.

Go Layton!!

sheesh....easy there folks. Was FUNGUY's comment a bit ill advised and insensitive? Probably. Maybe even a bit dickish? Perhaps, but it would seem that you all have proven yourselves to be not much better. Maybe the best thing to do is to (in a classy manner) point out why his comment was inappropriate.

Furthermore, from my perspective, Layton deserves to be treated for his health problems because we live in a country that has little excuse for not looking after its sick citizens. I am sure that there are countless librarians, road builders, fireman, etc. that have lost their health insurance and very much need financial help to cure their potentially terminal illnesses. I don't see anyone donating to these folks' causes and surely many of these folks did more admirable things for society (taught children, put out fires) than climbed a ton of routes. Climbing is more or less a selfish endeavor (and I do a lot of it) and I am sure that Layton didn't put up routes simply because he thought all of us would enjoy them. Thus, I find the argument that he deserves health care simply because he is a climbing legend to be a weak argument.

Nonetheless, I do hope that he raises enough money to treat his illness and I wish him well.

Cheers.

Hey, J., Some people gang-kicked FUNGUY. Others simply praised the Great 'Un.

Right you are Shawn. I was just trying to get those folks who were spitting venom to be a bit more constructive. Have a good day.

I completely agree with J. it is pathetic that we are the only industrialized country to not provide basic health care to it's citizens. Also I saw his show last fall and had a great time seeing and hearing first hand about his classic routes. Seriously if you get the chance to see one of his shows go, you won't regret it.

J - Nice of you to take the opportunity for your soap box speach that's really classy.

Maybe the original poster needs to feel what his insult to a legend feels like on the recieving end?

Is any body going to delete this thread?

As forum moderator, I'm not planning on deleting it. If it raises awareness of Layton's upcoming shows and brings a few more people out to see them, then it is serving a useful purpose.

And I really hope that the OP was indeed a troll, and not a serious post...

You're sure about that? Yeah, there are lots of firemen out there without health insurance, right. (I'm talking about full time pros, not part timers or those with weird gigs.) I'm "sure" that every full time, pro fireman gets sweet-ass health insurance, retirement bennys, etc.
Hard to say who "deserves" what, but I'd rather donate my bucks to a living legend like Kor than to some random schmuck (of which I am one). Not saying the random schmuck shouldn't get health care, but that really has nothing to do with whether some of us choose to send a few bucks Kor's way (and get a good talk out of it too).
And--except for volunteers--the librarians, road builders, and firemen that you mention were doing it cuz they were getting paid. How much did Kor get for climbing (maybe something from Nat Geo, I don't know)? It's apples and oranges.

I hope he is! Shit if I had any personal fame I would promote tampons and KY Jell if someone would pay me.
