I hope so...I have really been looking forward to maple ice this year

skied up to the left fork on the 23rd
no climbing just running my dog
not much ice in the main canyon
slabs hadnt formed yet
went up left fork
brittle stiffies was formed, but thin
if anyone is looking for a partner for maple, send me a message
i live about 35 min. from the canyon

Living close to Maple is nice, living in Sanpete county is unnerving.

josh holmes · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Sep 2008 · Points: 215

agreed
went up again on thursday
slabs still forming, thin (maybe 2 inches thick)
lots of stuff falling down in maple corridor
i lost my maple ice guide so route names are a mystery
the wi4+, just past the mixed dagger thingy (bottom is formed, but badly chandeliered), is close but the top 20' is not there yet

again, if your coming down to maple, i'd be more than happy to carry gear/food/beverages, belay, take your picture, play with your dog or any basic slave/sherpa duty in exchange for a run up a route

Thanks Josh.

If we get down that way (assuming it comes in), I will send you an email.

I went up yesterday (1/08/09), started in the corridor and warmed up at the base of the Dagger. Then we skied up to the Left Fork and plugged up The Wet Itchies great fun. 1st time on this route and was a little thinner than I'm used to. The bottom was snow covered rock, followed by a sustained steep section, the top was hollow sounding and once my pick busted through the backside of the ice.
Overall it was a tad warmer than I would have liked, but I guess it has been getting cold enough at night to facilitate the freeze/thaw cycle.
We climbed until it was too dark to see and skied back out by moonlight.
If it stays cold, we should end up with a great season of ice.
Hit me up if your coming down.

I went up again yesterday...looked like somebody else had been up there too, I saw signs of passage on the Roadside Couloir.
Way colder temps than last time, at the car at 3:45pm it was 28F.
Get Whacked looked better than the photo in the maple ice guide....if anyone is man/woman enough to lead that I'll gladly belay

I haven't made it to maple yet, but glad to see the ice has. The Pics look good Josh, now I just need to ask some time off. Another updates from anyone else who's been there recently?

Oh and I'm not sure how to post pics from FBook from internet explorer, but if you have firefox it's simple.

Stairway has been excellent above pitch 1, but you have to be willing to fight the crowds! There were close to 30+ people there on Saturday. Haven't been further north yet.

Get Whacked? Maple Moon maybe?

josh holmes · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Sep 2008 · Points: 215

i walked up the road to chicken limbo (just pass roadside couloir)...then turned hiked up into box canyon up to the box canyon falls (very thin 1" ice with holes)...maple moon looked doable, chandeliered in places, good but not as good as i've seen it. i'm heading up to tomorrow and will try to snap some shots....just before the rain get whacked was super fat (not like last year but it was well on its way), i havent seen it since

We climbed Get Whacked yesterday. It was good but seemed to be getting smaller by the minute. The top was pretty slushy.

SNIFF,SNIFF
I went up on Sunday and the ice...she's all gone ('cept for the base of the dagger, but it'll be gone soon too).
Lots of people trying to drive up the canyon, provided me with much needed entertainment (lots of revving of engines, digging and calls to Sorensons Tire and Towing in Ephraim). The best effort went to a team of three in a Subaru, they made it about 100 yards from the mouth of box canyon. They were way past a couple of full size trucks, one in the ditch on the southside (completely off the road) and the other right in the middle of the road.
The road is littered with the tell-tale signs of off-road recoveries (rutts, branches and garbage lots of garbage, the natty light beer cans up in Box Canyon is especially starting to irk me).
Please, if your going up Maple and you see some trash do the right thing and take a little with you. A good portion of the lower half of the canyon is private property and it would be a shame to create friction with the landowners. As climbers we should strive to set an example to the other user groups.
sorry about the rant

to sum up:
ice gone
trash plentiful
road sloppy
