I just moved to Bossier City LA from Massachusetts and am looking for someone to climb with in AR. I've heard about the stuff in northern AR like Horseshoe, but I've also heard there's some good rock farther south of Little Rock, which would be great for me since I'll be coming up from LA. Anyone know any more info about southern AR rock? I have weekends off for now and would love to climb something other than the trees in my new backyard! Thanks!!

Never climbed around mid AR, the stuff us Missourians drool over is Sam's Throne and HCR. That stuff isn't like our crumbly limestone with all of it's access issues.
There is a new guidebook out for Sams Throne and surrounding areas with a second volume supposedly coming. And one for HCR.

Note: I am not affiliated with the guidebook publisher it is just the only stuff in print, and pretty nice at that.

I'll be going down there hopefully before December, probably not climbing much but belaying!

Hi Kitty,
I moved to Shreveport from salt lake last winter and have been climbing up in ar a couple of times at mt mag. As far as climbing in the southern ouachitas info is hard to come by. I am interested in checking out some areas though because it would only be 2.5 hours, compared to 5-6 hours to hcr, sams etc. Mt mag is close to 5 hrs too so it would be really nice to find some descent climbing closer. I am trying to get a friend to head up there to do some exploring for rock next weekend so ill let you know what we find, or if your interested in coming along post up and ill let you know our plans, Ollie

Hey guys,

As far as rock climbing goes in the Ouachitas, or southern Arkansas for that matter, Mt. Magazine is pretty much it. There is a place near Lake Ouachita called Fiddler Rock that has a few bolted routes that aren't worth the trip really and Fiddler is hard to find. I'm not sure if it is still in print but Mt. Mag has a guidebook by Kerry Allen. You could call (877-521-6340) Pack Rat Outdoor in Fayetteville, Ar and ask for either Rick or Charlie and ask if the guidebook is still available. Mt. Mag has some great sport and trad routes and you won't have any crowds there. Maybe this will help some......

What is regurgitated about Clay's book? It's an update to his older guidebook and a much needed contribution to the climbing community. The amount of time he had to pour into developing this book is tremendous, and he had no references to go off of.

I couldn't afford the original guidebook, so even if it is a lot of the same stuff it isn't like routes disappear, I am sure it is updated too, it is coming in two volumes, much larger. The new Clay frisbe book gets me by just fine. Are you sure there is going to be a market for another brand new guidebook when one just came out on the same area. Is it going to be printed on the waterproof paper like the other? It looks like it will really hold up well.

I just can't wait till they get the Missouri book out, there are quite a few routes here not listed in the two older guidebooks. The guys at boston mountain press never replied to my email, it was supposed to be out in the fall...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
