I'm supposed to be going to Thailand in January and am concerned about the recent protests. Does anyone have the inside scoop on current local sentiment in terms of elections, will this process end in a democratically elected official, or another crony? Will we be seeing more protests? Is it safe to travel around the country, specifically Chang Mai and Phuket areas? I have wanted to go here for quite some time but am feeling like maybe I'll go somewhere else.

My friend just got back less than a week ago after five weeks in country. Travel is generally safe in the Chiang Mai & Phuket region, and in most of the rest of the country except for the region immediately bordering Malaysia. It seems that the protesting will be subsiding with the disolving of the last junta.

its g to g if the airports are open. notice you dont hear of any violence at the airports even though the country was losing 80+ million a day.

Chris
No problems... not from this.
Thailand has had over 30 coups since WWII... very little bloodshed in any of them... and none of it of foreigners. Go have a good time... and hope that you get stuck there.
The one thing you don't do in Thailand is mess with the guests...
You will have a great trip.

Thanks guys, we're going! Any recommendations for staying cheap around Tonsai?

For tonsai...

For the very cheap, share a room. There is post-it board on the jungle road on which people look for roommates. If you don't want to sleep in the same room as a stranger you will need your own place. Places range from $7-25 a night. One thing to look for is how many hours of power you'll have and what the hours are.

Krabi Mountain View - $20 a night, 12 hours of power all when your not there, your own bathroom and a cold shower.

Dream Valley - $25 a night, more power, cold shower

many many others and you can negotiate the rates especially if you stay longer. don't worry about the protesters, worry about the monkeys and tonsai tummy.

Hey guys, should we book ahead of time or can we just show up and expect to find a place? We'll be there in early January. Thanks for all the info!

Its the busiest time of year, but this is an off year.
You will PROBABLY be able to find something. If not you
can stay in AO Nang for a night and comute over.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
