Thanks to all for the evac off of Twin Owls on Sunday (8/10/08)

I just want to thank all the NPS rangers, CMS guides, EMTs, and all the other climbers that helped me off of Twin Owls in Lumpy on Sunday (8/10/08). I really do appreciate everyone's help. And a special thanks to the NPS ranger Ivan for letting me cuss him out while my leg was being stabilized, no hard feelings? I ended up with a nicely dislocated ankle, a small break in my fibula, and will need surgery to remove some loose fragments in the joint and possibly put a screw in my talus bone.

I have also read on MP.com that there was another injury on Sunday at Lumpy (Loose Ends?). I wish a speedy recovery for them!

Thanks again,

Tristan

Thought I heard a lot of sirens coming to Lumpy on Sunday.....

Didn't think the park service was having a party at the rangers house...

What were you climbing ???

Tristan, good to hear that you're going to be ok. My girlfriend and I were approaching the base of Lower Twin Owls when we heard the fall and were the ones to call and communicate with the NPS during the first stages of the response.

I agree, everyone did a great job dealing with the emergency and should be commended!

Good luck and here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

I had just finished leading Conads (which by the way is one sweet pitch!) and was starting up Wolf's Tooth. I had placed my first piece of gear about 10~15 feet up and was about to clip when my foot slipped and I decked. I landed with my right foot on one of the blocks at the base and my left foot on the ground and thus my right foot took the brunt of the fall. I felt as though I was well withing my limit, just goes to show that shit happens when you least expect it.

Tristian, I'm glad to hear that your ok. With all the accidents lately and untimely deaths of some of our climbing comrades, it's nice to know that even though you were injured, you were at least able to talk about it to us still and hopefully all of us will take what you said and stay safe no matter what we're climbing.

That sucks, Tristan. Saw all of the NPS trucks over at the lodge near the base of Twin Owls as we walked out on Sunday. Just thought that was left overs from the fall on Pear Buttress. The rangers must have had their work cut out for them that day.

Tristan,
Good to hear from you, thanks for the update. Offering a hand was our pleasure...the next time it could be us in a jam and in need of assistance. If you contact me privately, I'll get you a few photos of your evacuation (Tim has my info.). Best of luck with your recovery, and thanks to everyone involved, it was quite an effort.

Somewhere in those 4 1/2 hours or so I lost a #3 camalot. I didn't actually take it off of my rack, but people were grabbing whatever gear was available to put up anchors and directionals to prepare for the evac. My guess is that it was thrown into the wall somewhere and someone grabbed it by mistake in the cleanup. I checked with NPS, and they did not find it in with their equipment. If anyone that was involved has info on my piece, please contact me. It has green marking tape and a wiregate biner. -Thanks, Luke

Wow, glad you're ok Tristan! I was assisting a friend out of Wild Basin on Sunday (oddly enough, her name was Kristen). She broke her ankle (distal fibula) trail running about 4 miles up from the trailhead. We decided to self-rescue her, but the rangers decided they wanted to go ahead and bring her out by horse and use it as a training day. Just before the horse trailer arrived the ranger informed me he was diverting them to a technical rescue at Lumpy. (I'm guessing yours or possibly the other one).

We got out without any issues and Kristen is doing well. I also hope you recover quickly!!

Get better! Come back to Gunny for a visit someday once you've mended - I'll take you out to the Black.
