No worries, Cathy. I'm glad that you pointed it out, just in case Shear missed it the first time. I'm sure that he or she is doing some serious contemplation, after reading this thread.

93%, right?

Is that a trick question or something??

That many? Oh my god, in Orlando, its 40-30 minority, are you serious about all the Caucasians there....? I would throw up with such little ethnic diversity.

Yeah, we would like to keep this place to ourselves. The climbing here is not that good anyway.

Just note:

The high consentration of speedos in North America can be found at the north boulder rec center.

The highest percentage of Sppedos is actually found at the Flatirons Pool which is around S. Boulder. It's a private health club.
The way things are in Boulder anymore, if you wear a sppedo in public, ugh! you might just get escorted off the premises.

AND, the climbing here is overrated. IT's much better in the Cheyenne/Laramie Wyoming area where the women climb harder than the guys. Everyone should move up there.

Kinda late for the suggestion party, but here goes...

I lived on The Hill for a year, and wouldn't do it again unless I found an apartment West of 6th for a reasonable price. But that won't happen. Easy bike access to trails and climbing. The Flatirons, bouldering on Flagstaff, Boulder Canyon climbing, and some good trails are all close. You will have to deal with a seriously retarded set of college kids, though. The Boulder greek system has a hold on The Hill - avoid them. The rent here will be very expensive, unless you want to lease a room with some college students.

I lived in S Boulder for 2 years, near Table Mesa and Broadway. LOVED IT. Easy access to climbing the Flatirons area, Flagstaff bouldering, Eldorado Canyon, and even Boulder Canyon, and some great trails are easy to get to. You can bike to anything you need, grocery stores, coffeeshops, liquor stores, The Southern Sun, Neptune Mountaineering, etc. Southern Sun is pretty much it for bars in this area, but it's a great place. Access to 36 is close, and you can avoid a lot of the merge traffic jam at rush hour if you drive the right way. Plus, there are a ton fewer college kids and very little of the stupid Boulder college kid scene. This will be cheaper than the Hill.

I lived in E Boulder, near Foothills pkwy and Baseline for a year. Much quieter, still had easy access to all the shops I needed. More traffic than S boulder, mainly along Foothills pkwy. Even fewer college kids than S Boulder, though neither one of them have a lot. A few more parks and open areas, as well as access to some good trails. You'll still want to bike/bus/taxicab to the bars, I can't think of a single bar I liked in that area - there just aren't many. This will probably cost about the same as S Boulder rentals.

I've had friends that have lived in N Boulder, near the Ideal Market. A great area, easy access to shops and bars and restaurants and some great trails. Same access for climbing as the Hill, roughly. There is more traffic than S Boulder, about the same as the Hill or E Boulder. Rent here will be significantly less than the Hill, but more than S Boulder or E Boulder.

If you look for it, you can rent for under your price cutoff in any of these places, but you'll have to look much harder and make more concessions to live on the Hill than S Boulder, N Boulder, or E Boulder. Obviously, exceptions exist, but these rental guidelines should serve you well. I rented all 4 years for $400 or less (plus utilities) every year, though I lived with buddies the whole time. You're going to be close to great climbing in any of these areas of Boulder, and since you say you're driving, that won't be much of a deal-breaker, I guess.

Hope that helps.

Bob's right. Everyone has an opinion, but full body jamming against sharp crystals is pretty much at the bottom of my FunShit-O-Meter.

Come on, Bob. You and I both know that John's head is swimming in poo about the Voo being so much better than the Front Range, but the boltering comment was pretty funny.

John Langston wrote:Bob and Ken, you two make trolling fun. I didn't say that Vedauwoo is better than the front range. My point is that the climbing area equidistant from Laramie (Vedauwoo) is better than the climbing areas equidistant from Boulder (BC, Eldo, Flatirons). I'd never move back to Laramie though, so draw your own conclusions from that.
Sorry, John. I'm still thinking about the boltering comment. I think I'm going to make a tee shirt that says: "I am a bolterer, and damn proud of it."

Hey, Shear, are you taking this all in?

Joe Huggins · · Grand Junction · Joined Oct 2001 · Points: 105

So if after all of this Shear is still interested, I would point out that opinions are like assholes... Some people don't like Boulder because of (generic prejudice here), but for me it came down to one thing; where could I live and climb all the time and still have a real job? Turns out that list is pretty short.

I feel like I'm sitting in a room with all my friends, so this doesn't bother me at all. Yeah, still moving to CO. flying out in about 3 weeks to check places out and possibly meet some of these people who have emailed me.

thanks for all the info, it's been actually really helpful. I'm psyched to get out there.

Yeah, I'd probably pick from one of the 10 that the recent rag picked as the top 10 climbing places to live.

Boulder is pretty climbed out.

The only suggestion I can offer when you move to Boulder is prepare to take your climbing ego down a couple notches. Out east it was easy to enjoy being a "really good climber", or the elements of a small, close knit climbing community. Boulder will destroy any illusions you might have when the 9 year old girl next to you in the gym floats up a .13, or your project this year is the crag's warm-up route.

So I'm planning on flying out on the 18th for a few days to check out places to live and do some climbing. Is anyone available during the week to get out somewhere? I will be bringing minimal gear (read: shoes/harness/chalkbag/belay device/etc) so I won't have a lot with me. But I'm pretty psyched to check out some of the local stuff while I'm out there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
