Hey guys,

I'm about to head to Eastern Europe for a climbing/DWS/SCUBA diving trip and was wondering if anyone could recommend a company that provides travel health insurance for "high risk activities"? My insurance will cover some expenses, so I'm looking for an umbrella to cover the rest.

Also, a friend who will be coming doesn't have health insurance that will cover anything international.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi ya,

Why don't you try HealthCare International?

We had Mega life and health on our roadtrip. I'm not sure how they are about climbing, but they usually don't ask about diving. They also had a pretty good deal about getting you to a good hospital for free by helicopter or any other means.
Also check out AFLAC. They only ask about climbing "without ropes".
They basically give you a lump sum for accidents.

I just paid $540 for 9 months of STA Travel Insurance (Standard Plan), and since I threw down an extra $5.50 for the "adventure sports rider" I've covered for "mountain climbing." Apparently this refers to the equipment used more so than the "mountains" one climbs. If you use a rope and harness on a 25' sports climbing route, you need the rider to be covered. Read the fine print.

I used STA's coverage 3 yrs. ago and had to have back surgery in New Zealand. I fronted the $6K for the surgery, and this coverage reimbursed me all of it. No deductables or hassels. You can only keep the coverage for 13 mos. max, and it's meant to be for traveling only - so when you come "home," the coverage is supposed to conclude.

8/1 is my last day of employment for 2008. So very psyched.

We went with AIG since they cover international trips, offer primary and secondary insurance and were reasonably priced.

You must get the “Travel Guard” Package with "Adventure Sports Coverage".

“Adventure Sports Coverage” will include coverage for “High-risk activities” (roped rock climbing, scuba diving, etc.).

You can drop Trip Cost Insurance (coverage for plane tickets, etc.). This will save you like $30 for a two week trip.

They should email you some sort of confirmation and .pdf of the plan that they signed you up for. Finally, find out what else is covered…even though you opt out of Trip Cost insurance, I think that you may get some stuff like baggage/trip delay coverage.

Finally, we didn't need to file a claim, so I can't speak to how well they'd handle it...

AIG TravelGuard.
