Bouldering on Flagstaff one day

One day I was bouldering up on Flagstaff above Boulder.
Looking down the hill, I could see a funeral procession slowly progressing along Baseline Road. Then I looked to my side and saw a fellow boulderer taking a break from the problem he was working on. He had removed his hat out of respect for the procession taking place down in town.
I told him that I thought his reaction was one of the most kind and respectful things that I have ever seen a climber do.
He said, “Yeah, I’m really going to miss her. My wife was a good woman.”

The power of the rock seems to pull you away from the world for a moment and transfix you on only the problem directly in front of you.

Thanks Tom

Ed, I think my buddy Mark and I climbed a route on Devils Tower with you back in the mid-late eighties. You were recovering from illness and we ran into you at The Tower and did a routetogether, though which one I can't recall.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
