The restraining order is really a pointless item when it comes to self-defense. Though, I'd have to say I think a person isn't really acting outside of the law when defending themselves. If someone attacks a person in a public park, I feel the attacker's threat can be ended by whatever means necessary by anyone.

i don't think mike would attack any random strangers. i think his beef is more with huey than anyone else. and he probably isn't totally off his rocker or he wouldn't have pulled the inflammatory statements he made on myspace. i also doubt he would attack someone with tons of other folks around.

so all things combined. 10sleep should be a great time this year!

it is disappointing other fellow climbers are not welcome in his world though. 10sleep is far from secret and far from anywhere else. the hordes of people will never come. so it would be nice if he would relax.

the switch was just turned "off" for public and "on" to 'invitation only' - so who knows what craziness now lurkes behind the closed doors of "his-space"

Alright, I'll take the other position. I found his blog to be quite entertaining. The redneck story, falling in love with climbing, skipping three bolts and nearly decking, the foul language, the guns. Good stuff. Someone could make a movie out of this one. Perhaps he is the one that lured us onto his blog. If you spend a lot of time creating a website, don't you want people to see your stuff? His website probably has had more hits in the last two days than in the last two years. Did you notice grappler's profile. Not much substance there, huh!

PS: The guy that removes a bolt had no more, no less right to do so than the guy that put it there in the first place (on public lands).

If you read the Blogs Mike has posted on his page, and get a little history of the events and not just the qoutes "Grappler" decided to post, you would find that Mike had a right to be pissed off as hell. The guys he assualted blantantly disrespected him for their own gain after he showed years of hospitality to them. I recomend everyone read his full posts before you label him. I for one would be pissed off too. We must remember that each and every area we go to is importantant to someone, and we should respect it. In this case Mike has very strong ties to Tensleep, and a few guys who where out for self gain, showed little to no respect for Mike. I am on Mike side on this. Those other punks needed a wake up call!

I'm all for hearing both sides of the dispute, Ian. Care to elaborate? Just how did these other guys "disprespect" Mike and take advantage of him? Is this one of those stories about how one guy says he's going to write a guide book and then another guy actually DOES write a guide book, thus offending the first guy? Kind of sounds like it on the surface. Maybe you can fill in the details?

From what I read on his site there where two incidents;

One: Mike allowed a guy and his wife to stay at his house multiple times, it sounds as if they started out as friends, then the guy asks Mike when he and his brother are going to send their Projects. Mike explains that they both have jobs and have to work for a living unlike this other guy whom just climbs all the time (Mike labels him as a trust funder). The guy then proceeds to say if you don't soon I will. Well, Mike shows up and the guy is sending his project. After all his hospitality this is the respect this guy showed. Then he posts the route on rock climbing.com (MIKE DECKER TAKES IT IN THE ASS!) This could have been after the assualt. Anyway the guy deserved it.

Two: The other incident was with a guy drilling and chipping holds, and Mike scarred him off.

Sounds like this Matt guy had it coming. He also sounds like a tool.

If this guy Matt really did post the "Mike takes it in the hmmm hmmm" thing, well, he certainly was the tool in that situation. But honestly, I have to laugh at people posturing about who got the first send on a sport route. ha ha ha. Who cares? We don't even care who bolted them for the most part. I wouldn't care what happens to any of the routes I have bolted or who claimed the FA. People who like to fight over that stuff need to let go of it. Once you let it go into the public domain, it shouldn't even enter your mind again. Best policy in my opinion.

I cant believe that there are people in this forum making this out to be a joke. It wont be so funny when this guy shoots someone.

This post isnt about that, this post is about ONE man threatening to hurt any visitors he doesnt like. And potentially chop all their routes...

FAs dont matter. But violence and route chopping? COME ON PEOPLE. This isnt about Matt vs Mike. This is about MIKE vs EVERYONE that he doesnt want around.

Mike's story of the canyon is terribly twisted and inaccurate. There have been many bolters, not just mike. And they just want to be able to climb without the threat of violence.

Mike supporters better check yourselves. This isnt a joke. This is a sick person who is currently making threats unprovoked.

To be honest, yes I read all his posts, and I for one am not scared of the guy. I also don't think he would seriously injure anyone. He takes pride in his area and just wants respect. Did you also miss the part where he says he enjoys taking people there, and wants people to enjoy the routes he's put up for a long time.

I too could take a few blurps and use them out of context, but if you actually try to understand this guy you might see he just has no tollerance for certian people.

He used Piana and Skinner in a blog about chipping holds, and karma. He's entitled to his opinion. With your logic we should also be scared of Sharon Stone.

And, Grappler, if it is as serious as you say, why not use your real name. That usually helps your argument.

For me Mike is up front and honest about what he believes. You hide behind a made up name, and bash another fellow, and use his text out of context. Heck you could be someone he doesn't like. And in that case he might have a reason, seeing as you are currently hiding. Or you could be Mike we may never know.
