Hi,

I am looking for climbing areas close to a beach as I am doing a west coast road trip and would like to get in some beach bathing and surfing. any ideas? good camping spots near the crags? hostels?

Thanks,
Elan

Here are some So cal options for climbing by the beach.

Santa Barbara
San Ysidro-good crag with some face climbs and other moderate mixed sport/trad. This was my favorite crag in SB
Girbraltar Rock-A couple huge TR's with the best views. Also, the nose (5.11 crack). Pretty cool
There are a ton of little crags in SB. None would be "destinations" in and of themselves, but SB is all in all a pretty damned good place to be in general. Try El Capitan state park for camping. There are some lame priviate campsites also.

Ojai-about 2 hrs from the SB beaches.
Black wall-multipitch mods

LA area
Malibu Creek-Killer sport climbing in a beautiful park. Camping at the park
Stoney Point-never been, but its supposed to be awesome.

Also in Southern California there are the following options:
- Echo Cliff (sport climbing, near Malibu, camping area within 5 miles right on the beach, a little chossy in some parts, but typically less crowded than Malibu Creek on busy weekends)
- Corona Del Mar aka Pirate's Cove (bouldering, literally on the beach, some nice overhanging sandstone cliffs, worth a stop if you are in the area, avoid weekends and high tide, not much for camping in the area)

Also, Stoney Point is some distance from the beach, probably an hour drive with traffic, and can be unbearably hot during the summer months. There is some great bouldering there though and some topropes, but no sport climbing.

I think there's some climbing somewhere on the beach in Thailand also. :)
