Hola, does anyone know if there is a topo of Don's Crack out there on the web? If so, can you share the location? Thanks, Mike

OK Greg Opland that topo was completely badass. Any [technical] beta on how you made that so quick...?

Mike,

Check out climbaz.com, Bob Kerry's backcountry book is posted in there with plenty of information. I don't know if it has a topo of Don's Crack but it should atleast have a description.

I'd say the crux of it is getting to the route. I've done the SE arete and on the approach it's impossible to miss the start of Don's. It's a big gash with a few bee hives in it!

Anything on Babo is a guaranteed great adventure!

Have fun,

AJ

I was in Thomas canyon on Sunday and the illegal aliens are starting to use it as a route north. There is migrant garbage along the trail and at the camp in the saddle. We had a face to face meeting with four of them in the afternoon - I didn't really want to run into them and they didn't look like they wanted to run into us. We exchanged some nervous handshakes, gave them some water, and quickly parted company.

I wrote Marvin Stafford an e-mail asking about this (he has been up there over 30 times) and here is his response:

"You saw exactly what I saw, for the first time, last November, -- trash along the trail and in the campsite in the North Saddle. The trail used to go to the campsite, as a destination, with several summit routes taking off from there. Now, it goes thru, to the north, along the ridge. We burned a lot of fibrous trash and carried out at least four trash bags of plastic, metal and glass. We knew the area would not stay clean, but we could not just leave the trash behind."

We climbed Don's Crack a few years ago, it is worth the time. The crux might be the first pitch, a bit of traverse on an old bolt and some little nut placements to a bush or all the way to the crack itself. One gets to climb through lots of bush, in and out of a tree and inhale lots of insects. We encountered no beehives and no poison ivy. It is not a tough climb but a cool adventure. You can link up several of the pitches and belay wherever you desire. If there was a beehive it seems like it would be near the top of the last pitch of the crack, where the SE Arete joins the crack at the top for the last roped climbing pitch.
