AZ climbing history
|
The short discussions in the climbing guides about the early days of the technical climbs in AZ have wet my appetite for more. Anybody know if there are any books or articles on this subject. I am particularly interested in the story of Ray Garner and the Kachinas and the creation of the AMC. Also the Mt. Lemmon stories about Rupley etc. |

John Steiger's climbing guide A Climbers Guide to Sabino Canyon and Mt. Lemmon Highway has a short history about Mt. Lemmon. John Rupley is still alive and loves to talk about it. I will try to get you his PH #. I will PM you. |

Thanks for the replies. I love this kind of stuff. Years ago I read a great book about the early days in Yosemite with some great accounts of the FA's of Half Dome and El Cap. I wish I could find that one again. |

"Camp 4" by Steve Roper? |

Christian wrote:"Camp 4" by Steve Roper?I cant remember, it was something I saw lying on one of the tables in the UofA library circa 1990 or 91 and I picked it up and spent the next 4 or 5 hours reading it instead of studying like I should have been. I also found a good one on the 1953? attempt on K2 which failed. Another great story. I do remember alot of funny anecdotes about Warren Harding in the Yosemite book. No surprise there I suppose. ;) oh yeah, EFR if you try to PM me I dont have e-mail now and for about another week while we are moving our offices. (Again, daydreaming when I should be working...nothing has changed) |
