John Bradford > Scottish Gym Climbing

If you can call it a gym. Ratho Quarry is just that, a roof built over an old quarry. The routes a very long and very diverse. This is about as good as indoor climbing gets. The downside is it is impossible to heat! So chilly days in winter are the norm. In addition to this, the presence of the gym, and fears of liability, have put a number of excellent outdoor climbs in the rest of the quarry off limits. While there are questions about access, in general, climbing there is strongly discouraged. Ratho Quarry is owned by Edinburgh Leisure, and boasts a great exercise room, bouldering area, cafe and meeting facilities, along with an aerial obstacle course. Take a hat and have fun!
Follow the signs from Edinburgh down the M8, or take the road to the airport, and follow it to Ratho.
Not far from here is the Canal Center and a very good pub: The Bridge Inn. It is possible to ride the Union Canal towpath all the way from Edinburgh to Stirling, and beyond.
