I am looking for some BETA on remote moderates and wondering if anyone out there in the virtual world of the Information Super Highway could help me out. I am looking for places with a 5ish mile hike in, then moderate multi-pitches.

Places I have in Mind:
The Perch (idaho)
The Wind Rivers
The Tetons

Thanks for any help!

Only moderate at the Perch is the Mountaineers Route (5.9)?

Wind Rivers: I'd say the best spot that fits your criteria is the Big Sandy area towards Deep Lake. Haystack, Steeple.

Tetons: almost too many to count.

Define "moderate".

Scott,

If you are willing to pull on a piece of gear here or there (or if you think 10- is moderate) then there may be a few routes on the perch that are worth doing.

Here are some TRs from the Perch that I have posted previously...

Email me if you have specific questions.

Thank you for asking me to clarify, I was thinking of moderates as between 5.5 to about 5.9ish. 5.10- is also ok for a pitch here or there, but not everyone in my party would be comfortable doing a lot of pitches of it.

Brian in SLC, could you give me more info about the Winds. you can PM me if you like, or post it to the group so that everyone has access to the beta.

Thanks Everyone!!!!

In the Wind Rivers:
out of Deep Lake, which is a fairly easy 7 or 8 mile walk from Big Sandy, are the central corner on Haystack, (5.8ish) with a nice approach and 4 pitches. Also Steeple Peak, a bit more committing with a great summit and interesting climbing at 5.7 or 5.8. Also on Haystack is the Minor Dihedrals 5.9 Several others, the grassy ledges, and a 5.5 or 5.6 route lookers left of the central corner that I can't remember the name of it.

In the Cirque are many others, particularly on Wolfshead and Pingora. The Cirque is a more remote and committing, and more heavily used.

At the Elephant's Perch, the mountaineer's route is great; fairly straightforward. The approach is 3-4 miles but lots of elevation gain and is a pretty stiff walk in. The payoff is a fantastic basin to camp in above the Perch and at the descent gully.

The Tetons: many of the climbs can be done in a day, and overnight trips can always be done up to the moderates on the Grand. The seriousness increases because of exposure, weather, etc.
Good moderates that can be done from the trailhead include Baxter's Pinnacle (4-5 pitch 5.9) Symmetry Spire (8 Pitch(?) 5.7) which has a longer approach, the Open Book in Garnett Canyon (4-5 pitch 5.9+) and the Snaz in Death Canyon (9 pitch 5.10) There are many others, but these are some of my favorites. Check them out in the Teton Classics guidebook (Rossiter).
Hope this helps.

save some gas and hit Lone Peak.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
