I moved to East Vail (walking distance from the Designator) And am looking for partners this winter. Not much experience leading, but I am stoked to climb as much as possible this winter.

Yes, a Vail outing is in order as I have a report that there is ice now. Anyone who is keen and can belay is welcome, I am talking about having as many "boots on the ground" as possible.

Leashless strongly encouraged...

o.k. Ferrato ~ Now that we're 1 day older and a little wiser etc...

Does this mean there is a tiny bit o'ice 100 ft. up on top of a burly M10..?!?!? ~ and...the bit about 'having as many feet on the ground as possible' also warrants a clue to the possiblities that await... Ha..!

Me thinks to need more details...pssst ~ plz pm if it's truly FAT.

Should be tons of ice out there, it's been "cold & snowy" my source informs me.

I've been out half a dozen times now and sent a bunch of mixed and ice routes. This is a fine time to climb, conditions are very good right now in Rocky, Vail is coming in too. Get in touch if you want to get out...

Wait, so can anyone verify that there is really ice in Vail? I will be there tonight and if there is well then there we go!!! Anyone have a report on Lincoln?

I have a hard time believing Vail is prime.

Lincoln P1 & P3 of the Alley were in WI2/3/4, P2 is just a low angle walk anyway.

Lower Right was in with 2 sections of @ WI4 & 5 (the 5 was scary due to ice quality) and a small ramp @ WI3 -- this whole area was fat, but everyone didn't bother even TR'ing the 5 stuff, it just wasn't looking solid -- it was really warm up there.

Upper Right was somewhat in @ WI3, but not fully developed, it looked like everyone was leaving it alone. Sickle on a Stick & the WI4 pillar were not even close to being in.

PS - it was crowded on the weekend.

Dammit weekend warriors...get a new hobby.

Thanks for the update Mark. I appreciate the prompt response and when I arrive in Vail tonight and there isn't any ice anywhere that will be where I go. Be aware all, there will be traffic so don't bother coming.

Any real Vail reports out there?

There must be ice at Vail seeing as I got a report that guys were top-roping Secret Probation and beating the shit right out of the ice on that fine little route.

Hey Ferrato, we've met, twice in fact. Both times @ the Glacier Gorge parking lot. I sent you a pic. Anyhow, I'm game for getting me ass thoroughly kicked this winter. I've been out a bunch myself, but it's only my 2nd season. I'm looking for a DryTooling mentor. I'm game for RMNP, Vail, Ten-Mile (maybe not now, Avi could be bad), Breck. Maybe even Ouray/Telluride.

My, that's a lot of ice...

Conditions at Vail are coming along nicely, the Rigid designator touched down this past weekend, in many respects it is still early though. I will be going again, soon.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
