Is it just me or is his rope threaded directly through a sling at the top? I know it must not be but thats what it looks like... *gulp*

Actually, it's a long sling with a knot in it, with a draw clipped above the knot. It's not as sketchy as a threaded sling, but sketchy nonetheless.

Anyone have an idea on what's going on at the second bolt?

I think that the bolt that looks like the second bolt down is actually past Livin Astro. It's a bolt at the top of China Beach.

It is common to clip a 6 ft draw from a big rest jug on this climb- that draw being on the actual anchors of the climb. All the bolts shown are indeed on livin' astro, China Beach is a ways left still. I helped Joe K drill the bolt linking the two routes into "Astro Glide". that said,I think this is a posed shot there's no reason to take a fall like this...
