Colorado Alpine Avalanche Conditions

Has anyone dug any pits or have any beta pertaining to avalanche conditions in the Colorado Alpine areas due to all of the new snow in the high country. Is skywalker skiable? Is there big sluff slide potential on couliors or glaciers like Lamb's Slide? Has anyone observed any slides? Any information would be appreciated.

Is there a location where you can find updated information on conditions throughout the winter?

I don't know about current conditions, but check out geosurvey.state.co.us/avala… during the season.

Also, after the season starts, call 970-484-0457 for recorded avalanche and weather info updated daily.

I usually use the CAIC but it's out of season right now (its seasonal). I two was wondering about conditions pertaining to ski descents, when is the best time to ride powder on Torrey's (Dead Dog and north face routes). I have made 2 attempts on this peak in the winter once from the main trail head (long hike just to the start of the trail) and once from US 6 Loveland pass (only to turn around at grizzly due to no ski equipment). The peak seems demanding in the winter but I hope to get it this year.

Is there still any base in the high country at this time of year?

Jason,

That is a pretty sweet goal. I might have to put that one on my list too. I'm thinking that from a descent perspective right now or last week could have been the best time of the year to do anything that has permanent snow in it. Their are some areas in Colorado that do hold snow year round...put 2-3 feet on top of that ice and I think you could have something. Be real careful of the sluff slide. I saw on the news that a bunch of kids have been skiing at St Mary's Glacier and over heard someone talking about getting some lines in on Loveland pass although it's still pretty thin. Any reports on steep couliours in the last week would be appreciated.

Late February or early March are optimum times to get down Dead Dog couloir. I've been up there earlier and found that conditions tend to be a little sketchy.
Good luck.

Skied Jones Pass today, snow felt very stable. Nothing visible had slid. The main concern is coverage as things are melting fast. The drifts, gullies and leeward couloirs were the only things holding anything skiable at 12,000 ft and even those were a little bony.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
