... with my father. He isn't a climber, but he does enjoy hiking and he is in good shape, so I'm not really thinking along the lines of a route. I was thinking via ferrata or some cool hike. Anybody know the area well and can direct me to where I can get the most bang for my buck? Phil Lauffen

Maybe the Grand Balcon Sud?

You can do any portion of it. I think starting further up the valley around Col des Montets is really nice...and less crowded.

The cool thing about Chamonix is that you can take a tram (one of several) and be in an alpine setting in minutes where the hike would take a whole day.

You can do an alpine route or Via Ferrata feeling like you are days away from anything and be eating crepes 15 minutes later! The trams aren't cheap, but that why you are going with your dad!

I thought the views were better from the North West side of the valley, looking across at mount Blanc!

Lots of great walks if the weather cooperates. The walk to the Albert Premier hut is nice. Any of the walks in the Aiguilles Rouges is rewarded with a great view of the Mt. Blanc massif. The tourist info joint in Chamonix will have suggestions and any of the book stores will have good books on hiking. Or pick up a book describing the Tour de Mont Blanc, the classic walk around the range, and do a section near Chamonix. Tom Halicki

These suggestions look awesome! For reference we will be there in early October... Phil Lauffen
