Comments: Maybe without their gps they're afraid of getting lost on the descent (I know, I botched guideline #1).

Comments: Great pics! A good "bailing" story is always appreciated. Curious minds like to know and feel like they are not alone (misery loves company).

Comments: Nope, that looks like a scrape from a front end loader. When you fill in a shallow grave you don't smooth the center and pile the dirt around the outside. You guys have been watching too much "Ghost Trackers" :-)

Comments: We used to do traverses on that part of the wall, but we never imagined going "up"! Cool to see how you guys are pushing the limits.

Mostly, it was one of the few places that was dry and warm in the winter, which led to all kinds of foolishness.

Comments: I just posted some old photos from the Bu Chae Bawi climbing area near Pusan. These are historic photos taken in 1975 on a climbing weekend with the Korea Alpine Club, when I was stationed there in the army. We were climbing in big boots and kletter shoes. I don't remember what any of the climbs were, or were rated. I think it's a sport area now, but it wasn't back in those days. Those climbs were pretty severe in big boots (probably 5.8-5.9?). If anyone wants to use these pictures and set... more >>

Comments: "A new level of old boldness", great line Phil! However, these days I'm feeling "a new level of boldless oldness" :-)

Comments: I guess I'm just old school, but I thought that this climb BITD was an adventure to be remembered. Maybe new school climbers only enjoy an obvious, well-protected challenge and don't appreciate the route finding thing. Between the long approach, the route finding, the little gems of cool climbing pitches between the grunge, and the mid 5th class runouts, I totally digged this climb. I did it just before doing Culp-Bossier on Hallett, and I think it was the perfect warm up.

Comments: Dancing Madly Backwards is a song by one of my favorite groups of all time - Captain Beyond.

I have one of the original copies of this album with the 3-d picture on the front.

Comments: I remember going there a couple of years earlier with Jon Ake, Rosholt, Dickerson, and Jack Panek. As I recall, Rosholt was the one that showed us the place and he was also the only one to get up anything that was harder than V0. Those pre-pad days often turned bouldering sessions into beer sessions.

Looks pretty good, to quote you "it's not fair, it's not fair"

Comments: Yikes! if you zoom in and look left of the chains, there are lots of bullet holes over there, I count almost 70 of them. Looks like this area is the one that should have a climb named "Bullet the Blue Sky" instead of Penitente.

Comments: There was a period there where it seems like every time I went up to Taylor, Phil was up there pumping on this. He was a young man with a serious look to him in those days. When he finally sent this, he was less intense and broke into that patented Philo grin more easily. It definitely put him into the top echelon of Taylor dirtbags at that time :-)

Comments: This and Left Hand were my first 5.8 leads. I always felt that first pitch was kind of a highball boulder problem. Seems like I could never find any pro that I liked and I did it different every time. 2nd pitch dihedral is great for a 1st time leader, eats stoppers and hexes (showing my age).

Comments: I think that's a great pic too, the curve though is an artifact of the lens. If the earth curved that much over that short a distance, the earth's diameter would be smaller than that of the moon.

Comments: This is a great afternoon Fall and Winter hangout. Afternoon sun gives a great "oven" effect at the base. We used to sit at the bottom, quaf PBRs and partake in the mean green. Sometimes we even got around to setting up a toprope...great memories!
