Comments: Say it isn't so? Post climb Dr. Pepper and Payday are fond memories of youth. Sometimes, there were so many climbers in there that the place used to smell like "scuffed" lichen. What's going there?

Comments: Look at the way the pro is hanging and the Bastille is leaning, that spot is way steeper than the pic at first looks.

Comments: I was shown this problem in the spring of '72 by Chuck Tolton and Gunnison legend Charlie Pitts. We spent a whole evening buildering Chipeta, Taylor Hall, the OLD library, and the then "new" library.

Comments: It takes awhile to get used to flaring cracks. If all you're used to are Yosemite and Indian Creek splitters, these are an acquired taste. Climb a few more, like George's Tree, and you'll get the hang of it. Then when you've really got your act in gear, try Crack of Fear on the Twin Owls (I backed off in fear and lack of energy after the 1st 50 ft, and I was following!).

Comments: Maybe because it's so easy and fun, and steepens so gradually, that complacency lulls you into not placing protection until you get to your belay. I know that happened to me.

Comments: My first ice climb ever (winter of 79/80), with crazyman Bob Dickerson. I had a Hummingbird in one hand, Chouinard ice hammer in the other and Chouinard rigid crampons (black anodized) w/neoprene straps. Bob cruised it and didn't put in any pro until the belay (he was regularly free-soloing Bridalveil in those days). The ice was so thin that I could see water flowing on the frontpoints through the ice. I sold my ice equipment about a month later.

Comments: Yeah, I agree with the above ^^^^^+++ I'm also thinking that the approach could be epic, that's a pretty long ways in. I'm imagining breaking trail, whether on skis, shoes or postholing could be an arduous task, and then the real fun begins! (guess I'm just an old wimp)

Comments: I'm thinking sodium plagioclase feldspar more than quartz and the pinker ones are potasium orthoclase feldspar...i.e. "pegmatite". There probably is quartz in there, but I'm thinking it's not the majority component...could be wrong as I've certainly never been on that pitch, but I've looked at it from afar many times.
