Comments: The start of this route has changed significantly. There used to be a big block right of the crack. I distinctly remember grabbing that block and climbing up onto it to clip the second bolt. That block is now sitting on the ground 10 feet from the base -- I am sure glad that didn't happen while I was standing on it! I do like the start of the route much better now.

Comments: Warning! The last time I climbed this, one of the hangers on the two bolt belay at the top of the second pitch is missing. Bring a hanger and a wrench (or a small stopper for the bolt). Many heartfelt thanks to the jerk that decided stealing that $3 hanger was more valuable than the safety of my party. This is fun route. It has some long runouts on easy ground, so a good lead head is a must on pitches 1 and 3. The forth pitch, while short and easy, is also quite a head game in a strong wind.... more >>

Comments: I've got to agree with that last comment. Climbed it for the first time today and was not all that impressed. I guess if you like chimneys...

Comments: I have now climbed this a number of times, call me wimpy if you must, but I think this is harder than 5.6.

Comments: The direct approach from the usual pullout (the first one downhill from Windy Point) has degraded considerably. The new culvert there has been undercut it has become pretty hairy scrambing on big loose rocks. It is safer to go down the road a bit so you are directly above the Big Pine Towers and traverse back to the Rupleys.

Comments: This is a good area most times of year. There are routes in the shade and in the sun pretty much any time. Plenty of classic routes well worth doing in most any grade. The road construction has left the trail an absolute mess - watch out for lots of loose rock.

Comments: The first two bolts have been removed by Ben Burnham by request. The moves can be covered by small stoppers or very small cams.

Comments: For clarity, I posted this route as two stars so that consensus can drive the rating up without a long thread of arguing about stars. My personal opinion (and that of my entire climbing party) is that this is a solid three star route. I would compare this to Chihuahua Power, which is also three stars in my book. If this route was the only one worth doing at Boot Hill, I would still slog up the hill to repeat it over and over.

Comments: The face to the right of the bolts is about a 5.10a. It can be led using the same bolts clipping from the left side or top roped.

Comments: On the back side of Swim Fin, you can find Blazing Fin. Blazing fin is an easily accessible crag with a variety of nice moderate routes on both the east and west faces. There are both bolted routes and gear routes, so there is a little something for everyone. There are several routes such as Makin Muffins (5.7) and Ego Donor (5.9) where you can lead one route and then top rope another from the same chains. You can find a shaded route here most of the time. Rather than filling up the area li... more >>

Comments: I think the beat-up left belay bolt is the result of rock fall. There is other evidence on and below the route (rock shards) that there has been some rock fall activity here. Be careful out there.

Comments: To do this route the traditional way, skip the long runner on the second bolt and head up face to a gear belay under obvious block.

Comments: See the 1.5/3 next to the stars (probably lower now, thanks to this post) - that is an example of a consensus rating. Quality is subjective - nothing will ever be a three star route if nobody is willing to offer their opinion that a route is three star.

Comments: On a site that calculates ratings by averaging, CONSENSUS can be best acheived by people posting their own opinions.

Comments: The direct start from the trees is around a 5.10a move straight up the groove. You might want to consider skipping the first bolt - by the time you clip it, you have already made the hard move.

Comments: Tie a knot in the end of the rope to rap or lower off the first pitch! A 60 meter rope will only get you to a downclimbable ledge 5-6 feet off the ground.
