I happen to be a professional herpetologist & don't advocate getting that close to them for anyone else. It is not a mojave green. It is a very colorful common Colorado prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis viridis for the geeks out there). It was far enough away from the trail that I don't think it is an issue. It was at the upper base of Whale's Tail well below the trail to the bulge wall area. Plus, it ma... more >>

I suspect these were photographed either in colorado or southern wyomoing. what does this have to do with climbing? oh yeah, watch that next hand hold!!!!

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Moraine Park/Fern Lake Trai... : Jaws Falls (WI4) By: timt When: Feb 22, 2008 | view comment >> | Comments: Went to Jaws today. At 9:30 it was soft and wet already and there are 2 HUGE horizontal cracks going almost the entire width of the climb, 1 at the top of the cave and 1 around 15' from the ground. Ice was falling off too. I would steer clear and not be surprised if it finally fell this weekend.

Location: CO : Grand Junction area : Escalante Canyon : Photo By: timt When: Nov 28, 2006 | view comment >> | Comments: Excellent picture. The snake is the midget-faded rattlesnake (Crotalus concolor for us herp dorks). They are quite "spunky" and will not hesitate to stand their ground. You did the smart thing by getting out of his way rather than try to move him. This species has a very potent venom!

Location: CO : Alpine Rock : RMNP - Rock : Long's Peak : Upper East Face : Kiener's Route (5.3 Easy Snow) By: timt When: Apr 24, 2006 | view comment >> | Comments: Attempted on Saturday 4/22 and found these conditions. Lamb's Slide was great, didn't need crampons but firm enough to be secure--went very quickly. Broadway was a different story, as the snow was somewhat unconsolidated, but not too bad. On Kiener's chimney, there was NO ice, only sugar snow, again unconsolidated. After 150' off Broadway, decided to bail due to questionable snow above.
