Comments: Thanks for your thoughts about the pitons on Footloose.

The Pikes Peak Climber's Coalition is currently evaluating the fixed protection at the Garden of the Gods to make recommendations to the COS Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department about which routes might need work this year. The next step is approval by the parks department, since rock climbing is now a managed process at the Garden of the Gods, and all fixed protection that is placed and replaced must be approved.

Comments: I went out to RRC yesterday with Brian Shelton, and we replaced the second bolt on Mister MIA. The bolt was actually fine and would not have pulled out under any kind of a leader fall. The outside of the hole had been damaged by someone hammering on the head of the bolt and the nut, which caused some wobble on the part of the bolt outside the hole. We worked for 5 minutes with a crowbar but were unable to remove the bolt and ended up only breaking the shaft of the bolt off below the nut. We plac... more >>

Comments: If you start from the belay bolt about 30 feet up the easy slab, then the route is easily climbed and rappelled with a 200-foot (60-meter) rope. Scramble straight right along a sloping shelf from the base of Mo' Verde to the anchor or climb directly up from the base to it. It is preferable to belay at the bolt rather than at the base of the cliff because of poison ivy....

Comments: The Old Stage Road should be open by September. They recently started work on it and expect up to a couple months of work. Call the US Forest Service office in Colorado Springs for an update closer to the time you'll be here in the Springs.

Comments: Yeah, Brian Shelton and I climbed this beast in either 2005 or 2006, about the time that Bob D. and I put up Pink Torpedo. Fun OW crack climb that we never named. I mean really, who likes to climb crack at Shelf? So it's fine with me to leave your name, Jonathan. When we climbed it, I thought that maybe Mark Van Horn or Darryl Roth had climbed it before us....

Comments: Yes, there has been a lot of theft of hangers during the first couple weeks of March. At least a dozen routes have been affected, with both protection hangers and anchor hangers and chains stolen. It appears to be the work of a climber or climbers, since it would require climbing equipment to steal most of the hangers. It's very sad that it's come to this sort of vandalism. We would like to replace them but need funds to do so....
