Comments: I meant to add this earlier but as of July Fourth weekend, Red Rock Canyon Open Space is open for climbing. Please be careful on the access trails to cliff, since there is considerable erosion, and it won't be until this fall that a trail day can be scheduled. Thanks to the City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department for all their work cleaning up parking areas and restoring hiking trails that were badly damaged in the May flooding.

Comments: Climbing all the routes on The Whale is called a Whale Cap Day, since the vertical gain is about the same as climbing the Nose of El Cap in Yosemite or about 3,000 feet. Every route has to be led, and every pitch has to be seconded, so it's good to either swing leads or do them in blocks. We've always done it starting at the Whale's Tail at the north end and working south to Happy Ending. Brian Shelton and I did it in 3 hours and 45 minutes a few years back. Logan Berndt has also done it ... more >>

Comments: The Garden of the Gods Park is now open to rock climbing as of Tuesday, June 2.

After a month of unprecedented, record-setting rainfall, which saturated the sandstone, the decision was made a couple weeks ago by the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department to close the city parks to climbing. The climbing ban for North Cheyenne Canon Park and Ute Valley Park is also lifted, but Red Rock Canyon Open Space is still closed to climbing, hiking, and other uses because of... more >>

Comments: I can't remember the name right now. We did a couple easier routes on the blocky left side of the cliff. Some of the local tough guys here in the Springs have some 5.14 projects on the overhanging wall to the right.

Comments: ATTENTION!! The Colorado Springs Parks Department has CLOSED ALL CITY PARKS, including Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and North Cheyenne Canon, to rock climbing for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

This is due to record rainfall totals in western Colorado Springs which as caused severe trail and parking lot damage, saturated the sandstone cliffs, and is causing parts of cliffs to break off.

The parks will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine how the closure will l... more >>

Comments: Thanks for your thoughts about the pitons on Footloose.

The Pikes Peak Climber's Coalition is currently evaluating the fixed protection at the Garden of the Gods to make recommendations to the COS Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department about which routes might need work this year. The next step is approval by the parks department, since rock climbing is now a managed process at the Garden of the Gods, and all fixed protection that is placed and replaced must be approved.

The PPCC... more >>

Comments: I went out to RRC yesterday with Brian Shelton, and we replaced the second bolt on Mister MIA. The bolt was actually fine and would not have pulled out under any kind of a leader fall. The outside of the hole had been damaged by someone hammering on the head of the bolt and the nut, which caused some wobble on the part of the bolt outside the hole. We worked for 5 minutes with a crowbar but were unable to remove the bolt and ended up only breaking the shaft of the bolt off below the nut. We plac... more >>
