Comments: Steve's Arete (5.11a). The requisite photo op route on Mt. Lemmon.

Comments: This is the obvious arete route past the chimney on the same side as the main wall. It's tall and has 12 bolts. The leftmost route (5.8) on the other side (Wall of Waltzing Witches) isn't named in the guidebook, and I don't think it has been posted here. That sounds like the one you're talking about.

Comments: This climb is way taller than 50 ft. More like 90 ft. It uses up most of a 60-meter rope by the time you lower off. Very fun.

Comments: To get to the routes on the backside, take the faint trail down and around a large fallen tree then work back toward the cliff. Scramble through a notch and up to the climbs on the left wall.

Comments: I think I lost my ego on this route. It will look deflated and should be somewhere just below the anchors. If anyone sees it, tell it wait for me, I've just gone to look for the holds for this route as they seem to be missing.

Comments: New directions from farther up the road: Go past the hairpin turn where you would normally park. The road goes through two right curves. On the straight before the road turns left there is a dirt area on the left side to park. On the right side of the road is a bit of a trail leading up the hill. (There is currently a cairn up at the top.) Head up and left from the road to the top of the ridge. Go left along the ridge and you can pick up a faint trail going around the right side of a knol... more >>

Comments: I might go 11a but it's not the same grade as, say, Steve's Arete. If this is 11a, Steve's is 10c or d. Not that Steve's should necessarily be the standard for 11a, but that seems to be the consensus. I thought it was considerably harder than any of the 10d's at Munchkinland, for example. Again, no reason for a ratings debate, it's all so subjective anyway, but that was my rationale for the rating I gave.

Comments: Yeah, that first route sort of confuses things when you start down the hill. Looks like someone's been out there recently putting up the route (which looks like it might be fun when finished). Once you get down to the alcove where "Kick the Baby" and the others start it's pretty easy to figure out which climb is which.

Comments: This route is a little trickier to find now that another climb has been added nearby. Directly in front of the curved tree is "Who's Your Wizard?", which has distinctive brown hangars. To the left is "Ruby Slippers", which has an obvious curved crack near the start. "If I Only Had a Brain" is left of this and has a high first bolt. The anchors are lower than those on "Ruby Slippers".

Comments: If you traverse to the left end of the ledge at the end of the 2nd pitch and belay from there, you can run the 3rd and 4th pitches together with a 60-meter rope. This lets you skip the hanging belay, which you will discover on the rappel down is a very uncomfortable place to hang out. Better to skip it if you can.

Comments: Hmm, what would that mean an X-rated climb's holds were shaped like?

The reason is the large questionable-looking block about halfway up. It's only a matter of time before someone yards it off onto their belayer. That said, it's been there for years without incident... Still, I'd stand back if I were belaying.

Comments: There are two sets of anchors to the left of this route, which I felt don't deserve their own separate route descriptions, but people might like to know about them. The anchors are bolts with rings (no chains). They sit too far below the lip to access easily from on top of North Fin, but if you climb Killer Whale, it is easy to traverse over to TR the next one, then do the same after that for the leftmost route. The righthand one is mostly 5.8 with a move or two of 5.10 near the top. Nothing... more >>

Comments: The nuts on the chain anchors of this climb were very loose when we were there today. As in, at-the-end-of-the-bolt loose. Five-full-turns-to-tighten loose. No one around had a wrench so they are only hand tight. Which leads to a question: what size wrench do standard bolts and anchors use, so I can start carrying one in my pack?

Comments: This seems to be going against consensus, but I liked Dunka better than Dunka Dunk. Dunka Dunk has one less loose foothold after today, though.... There is some loose rock to watch for when topping out and when pulling the rope, so make sure your belayer isn't napping. (Probably good advice in general.) Both routes are fun!

Comments: Yeah, the photo was taken during the one sunny moment of the day. 40 degrees, mostly cloudy, steady 30 mph winds. Maybe not the coldest ever, but it was more than a little uncomfortable climbing overhanging sharp rock with frozen fingers. We had fun anyway!

Comments: Her right hand is facing down for braking, it's just hard to tell in the pic. She would pull down to brake. The left hand is just to help guide the rope.

Thanks for the compliments on the picture!

Comments: The anchors on this climb seem to be missing in action. There are bolts but no hangers or chains. You can easily use the anchors on Sight Unseen to the left. But it's nice to know this before, say, leading Myopic while someone else is toproping Blinded by the Light.

Comments: There was still some small loose rock on the lower part of this route as of 12/06. It should clean up well and is a very good route.

Comments: This is a nice crag. There are flat clear belay spots at the bottom of almost every climb, and there is a nice variety of climbs. That said, some routes haven't been traveled enough to be free of all the loose stuff. Some of the routes, like Solar Flare and Sun Dialed, are on flawless rock. But some of the more moderate routes (and even a few of the harder ones) still have some chunks that might rain down on your belayer, so be careful. All the faces get sun pretty much all day, so it's per... more >>

Comments: We did all three routes along this wall plus the two newer routes on Righthand Wall, and I think this one had the LEAST loose rock. It must be cleaning up well. The bolt line on the first pitch does tend to urge you right while the holds are left, but it's pretty obvious you wouldn't want to be clipping bolts drilled into the chossy stuff you're climbing. I think it's well bolted. The first pitch is nothing special but it is well worth it for the second, which is varied and not easy even out... more >>

Comments: Good climb, but I agree that it is at the hard end of 5.9. No soft grades on this one!
