Comments: Thank you for your comment, David. I tried to clean as much of the loose rock from the route as I could. There was a lot to clean, so I probably missed some stuff. I did leave that big rock at the anchors there because I tried to pry it loose and it wouldn't move. It makes me nerves as well, but it seemed pretty stable at the time I put the route up. It might have to go at some point. As for the cactus, there is a lot of it, but there was a nice little clearing to stand and set up your anchor, s... more >>

Comments: Alex and Toni, thanks for putting this up. I took a friend out for her first time climbing outside, and it was awesome to have this easy of a route for her to build her confidence. It was also nice for me to only have to climb one route to set up two.

Comments: Thank you John, I've been looking at that and would like do it at some point. I have a line laid out that would go just around your property, but still it would be a pretty direct route.

Comments: This morning the WCCC painted over the graffiti on the old explosive bunkers out at the Shacks. The City of Grand Junction supplied the paint as part of our joint effort to clean up the area. There is still graffiti to be removed from some of the boulders, but we wanted to get the painting done before it got too cold and we had to wait till spring. We’ll get to the graffiti on the boulders soon. Happy climbing, everyone.

Comments: On July 28th 2012, the Western Colorado Climbers’ Coalition completed the second and final phase of the parking lot on the Mothers Buttress property. With this, the Mothers Buttress project is finished. This would not have been possible without the help of volunteers, donations, and grants. A special thank you to the Petersons, who bought this property to keep it in climbers’ hands and subdivided it so the cliff side would be open to the public for future generations. Your support and continued ... more >>

Comments: The Western Colorado Climbers’ Coalition had an Adopt-a-Crag day out at the Shacks on July 28, 2012. During this, the trail to The Ridge was repaired and cairns were placed to make it easier to find. The trail starts just before you get to the Warm Up boulder (Easy Flake, YO-TAN-CHI-LA) and achieves the ridge next to the Vodka Boulder. The trail was rerouted in a couple of places to help avoid erosion.

Comments: The WCCC had a great turn out yesterday and a lot of trash and broken glass got picked up. We also fixed the trail to the Upper Band that had washed out in several places. The trail starts just before you get to the Warm Up Boulder (Easy Flake, YO-TAN-CHI-LA) and achieves the ridge next to the Vodka Boulder, follow the cairns. There is still a lot of trash and broken glass to be picked up of course; this was only the first step.

The WCCC is coming to an agreement with the city to take... more >>

Comments: I’ve done some research on this area, and it looks like the boulders are on public land or at least land that is owned by the city. The main issue is it is in the middle of a neighborhood. Please keep a low profile, and try not to do anything to upset the local home owners. It might be a good idea to not overcrowd this area as well, so if you get there and there are already a couple cars, maybe go to Riggs or Dynamite Shacks instead. Being respectful and courteous to homeowners, and maybe pickin... more >>

Comments: Public Service Announcement:

DO NOT TOP ROPE DIRECTLY OFF THE FIXED GEAR!!! This is a popular area and the chain links are already showing signs of wear from people threading the rope through the chain links instead of toproping off their own gear and only rappelling off the chains. A lot of time, effort and money were put into bolting this area. Please respect that and do what you can to do the least amount of impact.

Comments: I talked with one of the guys that works at the park yesterday, and he said they expanded the zone to go around the corner more. I think Desert Solitaire is affected by this expansion.

Comments: NEH: the kid that took your draws is new to outside climbing and didn't know any better. He felt really bad when we told him he shouldn’t have taken them. I had him drop them off at the gym and you can pick them up any time. He didn’t take the biners off of Baby Bang.

On a side note: The BLM has asked that we not leave draws hanging in this area and mentioned how easy it was to rap in and hang draws then rap in to take them back down after. Just passing the word.

Comments: It seems as though it was other people hanging out and drinking back in this area that shut down this access point. According to Phil Akers, ranger at CNM, this was never a legal access point but this is something that is currently being debated. When I asked him why rangers have been telling people that this was a legal access he did not comment. Phil did say the monument has been working with Mesa County GIS to determine all of the legal access points to the monument and a map will be put o... more >>

Comments: The BLM has asked that we no longer climb on this boulder for obvious reasons. Please respect this to preserve the history locked in this rock for future generations.

Comments: Is that the Student Aid route that’s listed in Desert Rock III? Nice work on freeing it if it is (well even if it’s not) that line looked hard.
