Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : Vail Ice : Pencil & Eraser area aka Be... : Guano (M5) By: richP When: Feb 20, 2007 | view comment >> | Comments: Yeah, it was first called bats, then I realized it was a piece of s***, so I renamed it guano. No, really it's a fun route if the ice is there. By the way, is the ice there this year?? Have fun.

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : Vail Ice : Spiral Staircase area : Secret Probation (WI5 M6-7) By: richP When: Feb 16, 2007 | view comment >> | Comments: If my memory is correct, the last time it formed in "original" condition was around '96 or '97. Since that time, the route has been gigantic compared to the time around the FA. M6 works but these grades are hard to diagnose anyway. How do FAs get mixed up anyway?

I remember the FA of this route at the end of the season in 2000, stellar "thin" pillar climbing I actually could feel the dagger sway. Over the next few years and sending the route over a half dozen times the exit onto the ice has always been different. That is what makes mixed climbing so fascinating - it's always changing. I had actually been in the cave not 1 day before this rockfall occured. We decided not to climb as It was super warm and late late in the s... more >>

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : Vail Ice : Hell's Cave By: richP When: Feb 14, 2007 | view comment >> | Comments: This cave is about a twenty minute hike east of the BELFRY (upper Spiral Staircase). It boasts one route 'Nosferatu' at about M9-10 or so. I put this route up in summer when water was dripping off the lip of the cave. When winter rolled around, the water dried up and never formed ice; however, late in the season the cliff was coated with verglas (thin). There is also a big cliff that gets some ice just above this cave which has at least one unclimbed route. There is huge potential her... more >>
