Comments: Just to clarify the directions a bit... From making the left on Thelin Street, after about a block turn right on a small road which has a gate about 30' in. Set your odometer because you arrive at a hidden right turn at exactly 5.3 miles. After about 2.5 miles there is a "Y" with a sign on the right "equestrian park" or something like this. You want to stay to the right here even though there is a post on the left fork saying "06-08". You will know you are getting very close when you see som... more >>

Location: CA : Sierra Foothills North : Cosumnes River Gorge : Buck's Bar Dome : Candy Corn Boulder (5.7) By: Paul Rezucha When: Feb 6, 2011 | view comment >> |
Comments: A good way to do this climb is to move left about 7' after you are standing after the initial jamming cracks. Move left and finish on the right-most crack. Good gear and fun moves takes you to the top. This is one of the variations of Beginner's Crack but makes the Candy Cane Boulder into a full fun climb.

Location: CA : Sierra Foothills North : Cosumnes River Gorge : Buck's Bar Dome : Drastical (5.9-) By: Paul Rezucha When: Feb 6, 2011 | view comment >> |
Comments: Drastical doesn't look like much from the ground but it is actually a very fun climb with many good moves and fun gear placements! I placed a tiny brass nut in the initial thin crack that might have kept me off the ground getting the first really good piece in in the little vertical crack right of the main upper crack. You have good hand holds with smears for feet but you can comfortably place this piece. Once you stand at the base of the upper crack you can get several great placements before... more >>

Comments: Yes,what is this? A lake or a puddle? Very difficult to figure out! Oh wait... The rippled wall is above the water and water is running down. It looked like the water was above and overflowing down the dam-like looking rock. Cool shot!

Comments: Route looks nice but I hope that all those horizontals and vertical seams are all closed off and can't take gear. Certainly up above the big crack looks like it would take gear...

Comments: It was a long time ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday... Looking down I could hear Ivan working the moves under the roof and heard a slap and saw a puff of chalk float out, then saw the fingers inching out and onto the horizontal. A big swing of the feet, desperation in the eyes, some real struggling, and he made it. After Ivan got to the belay, he asked me if I gave him any tension. (I didn't as I knew he would want to do it clean). I said "No". He said, "You bastard!"... more >>

Comments: Bruce, (or anyone in the know) in case you see this... I attempted going straight up from the ground last weekend and managed a move or two past the first bolt but was hesitant to commit reaching the second bolt. Is the ramp on the left used at all to step to or is the ramp completely off limits? I gather clipping the second bolt is where you describe a potential ground fall... thanks!

Location: CA : Tahoe Vicinity : South Lake Tahoe : Sugarloaf : Sugarloaf, West Face : Happy Face (5.10c) By: Paul Rezucha When: Apr 30, 2010 | view comment >> |
Comments: Happy Face was a great climb! Much longer than it looked with lots of continuous thought provoking climbing. I placed 2 small cams and a Metolius Astro brass nut as the highest piece in the initial crack which sowed up the starting sequence moves very nicely. Getting past the sloping mantle took some figuring out and the upper section didn't let up much. I did go straight up from the last bolt and the moves were very thin with feet a little above the bolt. Being in a somewhat sideways posit... more >>
