Comments: Allen that is a terrible place to bivi. Did you even have rain gear? That ledge is not a bad place to re rack and get going. I wouldn't want to do that runout face on the last pitch in the dark or in the rain. I am sure that to staying put until morning was the right choice. So close, yet, so far away!

Comments: Scott and Allan, I posted an image of the page in "Climb" with Dave Bell leading Tongo that both of you mentioned. I posted it on MP in my album labeled "My Stuff". I would have liked to have posted here, but I was unsuccessful.
Slim, Allan posted that great image of Dave by the river. I am glad that we all have access to it here on MP.

Comments: I just noticed the shoes hanging from my swami.
WOW!!!
If you don't remember the" Nike Waffle Trainers" you weren't in Eldo.much during that period of time.
I remember one day in Eldo. (after the shoe had been discontinued in the stores) Kevin Donald noticed that I was wearing a new pair of NWT's, He offered a premium price to buy them right off my feet.
I realized their value and didn't sell them to Kevin.
They were the first athletic shoe that we found that climbed well.

Comments: If you are a windsurfer and need a break from the nuking winds in The George or if the wind shuts off and you have your shoes there is plenty of mostly moderate bouldering and toproping at this unique little tucked away jewel of a spot. I have lead a few fairly steep pitches there as well. Definantly worth going out of your way to visit.

Comments: Air Voyage is definitely the wildest, most exposed and physically demanding route that I have ventured on in the Black! I was "soo" fortunate to have Peter Prandoni as my partner for the climb. He gracefully swam up the 12 off width with the technique that only a veteran of numerous desperate wide cracks could. I on the otherhand groveled and whined my way up that section and never regained my usual energy level through the remaining pitches. We finished in the dark and was greeted by a ranger tha... more >>

Comments: This image brings back the memory of the time that Steve Morris and I hung our ropes while rapping down "Pale Fire" at dusk.
I volunteered to climb back to the summit and fix the problem and Steve agreed to lead the rest of the decent.
I had to use some unique techniques to protect this unbelayed pitch. A little free, a little aid you know the drill.
I made it back to the summit and fixed the problem as a magnificent full moon was rising over the horizon. The entire desert was instantly illumi... more >>

Comments: Kevin, Thanks for your re-bolt efforts in the Spires. I am sure that this route will get more of the traffic that it deserves with bomber clips.

Comments: There isn't much in the way of feed back for such a great area.
Years ago while on a desert climbing tour, I visited this area and camped on what was known to us as the "front porch"a large ledge that overlooked miles of desert. At the base of an overhanging cliff there was an obvious fire pit that had to have been used for centries. My question is has anyone else built a fire in this pit and what did you see illuminated on the face of that overhang! The image we saw was ere enough that we moved ... more >>

Comments: Hey Rob, I am sure that after your ascent of any one of the fabulous routes that terminates via this magnificent grovel, you wouldn't want this image turned any way but the way it is projected!

As I recall this section of stone, the level of wide-eyed, ass-puckering exposure, combined with the open-gated adrenalin flow from all the hard pitches that I had negotiated, compounded with the anticipation of the ice-cold medication in my cooler, created quite a magical crescendo!

Comments: Dave Bell was an old friend and it was tragic that he passed so young.
We can all take a lesson from Dave and realize that this is not a dress rehearsal. So we need to get on with living our dreams instead of putting them off until it is more convenient. I have never heard of any one that didn't benefit from taking that step! Noel broke his tibia a few days ago and will be out for some time to come. This happened just before I go to Colorado. I was hoping to do a route with the lad. Maybe next t... more >>

Comments: This climb has every thing that you want in an adventure pitch!
For best results don't over beta it. Place the gear that you find and climb!
Art and Jim may have had EBs in '73, probably not. They were climbing with only two inch webbing wrapped around their waist (no harness) and probably waist belaying as well. There gear was not even from the same universe as the modern climber. Nuts were around, but they hadn't evolved.

There is a special image in my memory of a soft afternoon breeze across... more >>

Comments: I was totally honored when Ken Trout invited me to have a stab at freeing his new line.
Ken and Kirk Miller had hooked and drilled the first two bolts on aid.
That was a great start and it made the rest of the pitch sporting but safe.
I free climbed up to their high point and then went for the top putting in two more 1/4" bolts with a hammer and hand drill from small and very steep stances. From that point, it was moderate slab climbing and I could have easily cruised to the top.
I thought tha... more >>

Comments: Ahh, I remember that perch now!
I haven't seen Noel in some years. I will be in Colo. later this month for biz and climbing with the gang. I will probably run into him then.I'll be sure to pass along the greeting.
Waves are up here on the North Shore this week! I'm going surfing before the wind gets on it. Aloha , Olaf

Comments: Alan, This image says,"soo" much!
Exactly where is this ledge, I think that it resembles the belay after the long runout pitch just before topping out?

Comments: Bob, this is a wonderfully informative image of the Cruise and Scenic Cruise. Realistically it is all that a competent climber (with a bit of verbal beta) would need to do either of these routes.
