Comments: It should be noted that before the guidebook A Dome Driver's Manual was published, this climb was rated 5.7 or 5.7+. It may have gotten slicker over the years but the crux is definitely right off the ground, and this is the most committing move on the climb. But once that move is made and pro is in, the crack is right in your face and there are ample opportunities for wires or small cams.

Comments: I led this route on Sunday, beautiful day for it. Much more aesthetic than my first lead on it (I went up through the chimney, ugh!). Good opportunities to use old fashioned hexes on this route. Check the black marks on the ledge below the station. Your rappel rope should run to the right of the two knobs on the boulder. If you keep the rope there, you will have just enough with the stretch to reach the ground.
There is a significant drop off at the flake. I recommend a prusik to slow yo... more >>

Comments: Doug,
You said "On my first trip to RR, I climbed a line a hundred feet to the left of "Cat in the Hat." That is exactly what happened to me the first time I led it. I couldn't understand why a 5.6 pitch could feel so damn intimidating. Thing is, it looked like the logical way to go. That often happens when you are off-route.

Comments: I led this route on Sunday morning and it was nicely shaded. Had a bit of trouble at the top, needed some extra slings and just ran short. I traversed right of the roof after the crux and continued up the 5.5 route to the top. We knew the descent was a traverse right but it had been a long time since we had been up there and we were a bit uncomfortable with the exposure.
We did not have two ropes and a 60 meter will not reach the ground from the rap ring/anchor. I climbed above the route th... more >>

Comments: I had the luck to climb this route with Derek Walker in 1993. Coming over from the limited climbing available in Texas, the texture of grit was and is way different than granite.
That said, this little route is a classic. The traverse from p2 belay is a little spooky unless you know there is a very nice hidden hold/stance waiting for you at the end. Sweet and easy to the top!

Comments: Jim Arnold and I climbed this route Saturday. The wall was ours, the only other party nearby was on Rising Moons. We climbed with twin 60 meter 8 mm ropes. It is important to set stations in the correct places. We set anchors at the ledge and tree at top of p1 instead of up the ramp on the right. Traversing up the ramp and setting pro before starting up the face creating lots of drag on the system.
Stations are not obvious and I felt that anchors we set were often 25 feet below where they... more >>

Comments: It is possible to 4th class down into the notch between the top of the crag and the other formation. From there it is a short scramble down to the base on the back side of the crag.

Comments: Be aware: As of Saturday, February 2, there is construction going on just beyond the entrance to this area. When we came up this morning, intent on climbing on the east face of Whiskey Peak, we found the gate was blocked off. Cyclists found there way through, but anyone going climbing at BV would be looking at a 4 mile approach before they even hit the trailhead.
There is another cattle guard a few hundred feet to the west of this entrance that appears you could circumvent the blocked gate. ... more >>

Comments: I would disagree with the 5.9 rating. Although pitches are long, there is adequate pro and hardest moves on the climb are 5.8, unless you are off route. Traversing right from the top of pitch 1 there is an easy ledge system that angles right. Follow this straight up to the top of pitch 2. If you don't go far enough to the right, the moves are closer to 5.9-5.10. Pitch 3 is the money pitch. The route supposedly goes on for two or more pitches per the FA leader.
It is possible to do anothe... more >>
