Comments: You're right, Fat Dad. I just looked it up; it was the Central Latitudes. I'll fix the caption to read C3 (which is what the Supertaco book calls that pitch.) Good eye!

Comments: I did the first two pitches of this thing last year. I thought they were both rated 5.9 when I climbed it; at the time, I thought the second pitch was pretty sand-bagged. LOL, .11b sounds more like it.

Comments: IMO, the crux is higher than the author indicated. There's also a PG-13 section near the 1/3 or 1/2-way mark of this route.

Comments: Bring micro stoppers; they work well to protect the crux. I won't tell you the exact one to use.

Comments: Bring a couple of hand-sized pieces. They will be the last decent piece of protection you get for the top-out.

If you're going to TR the route, try to use gear instead of the trees.

Comments: I've never even been to Rifle, and I feel like I climbed the route by reading the description. No need to go now I guess.

Comments: It's my understanding most people start this variation on the low-angle face directly below the crack. To suggest another variation: Start on the left of the face and follow the seam (that eventually turns into the crack) in from the left. It's probably goes at about 5.9, no protection. It's aesthetic and enjoyable, IMO.

Comments: I was so eager to finish the Narrows pitch because I perceived it to be the last real hard pitch and it was getting dark, that I entered facing the wrong way and forget to hang my shoes and water bottle off a long sling. Needless to say, I realized the hopelessness of my inane variation and simply fetal'ed-up and took a little ride (after placing a #4 of course). It's a very interesting way to exit the famous pitch if you ever get the opportunity.

Other than that, climbing the Steck-Sal... more >>

Comments: Can anyone tell me what they consider to be the best approach for this route. I'm going to attempt it sans rope, so if one of the approaches is steeper I might not necessarily mind. Likewise, if one of the approaches still has snow on it this time of year, I wouldn't be as interested, as I'll be wearing Tennies most of the time. Thanks for any approach beta you can provide.
