Comments: I'm surprised by the description for this route. As far as the mantle move, stem, step left and push up. I didn't feel aired out much at all for that. I had my belayer yelling "clip!"; however, before I was able to get to the first bolt out right on the face. I didn't find any loose flakes. Maybe these have cleaned off. I did feel that it was a little hard for the grade, maybe I was having an awkward day. The roof at the top was excellent and fun. Clip from a heel-hook on the left and ... more >>

Comments: Loc, it's accessed from the crags trail on the west side of Pike's Peak. It's on the way to Cripple Creek, just after the east side of Mueller State Park, left side of HWY 67. I believe there is a brown sign pointing the turn off the highway.

Comments: Fantastic route! It has consistent climbing, but I don't think it checks in at .10c. More like .10a compared to other Elevemile sport climbs.

Comments: Just got back from a trip to Maple. My husband and I ate at Roy's Pizza in Ephraim on a rest day and WOW! I was really impressed by this small-town pizza joint. The ingredients were fresh with a homemade taste. $15-20 for a large pizza, on the left side of HWY 89 coming from the canyon.
By the way: beware of the squirrels both at the crag and the campground. They will run off with your food, tear up bags containing food, and they are capable of chewing through plastic peanut butter jars.

Comments: Thanks to Kirk Miller for this great addition to CCC. I really enjoyed all the routes I was able to get on today. All are well-bolted with good anchor positions and the movement is fantastic! Thanks for the investment.

Location: CO : South Platte : Elevenmile Canyon : Elevenmile Dome By: Lauren D. Hollingsworth When: Jul 11, 2008 | view comment >> |
Comments: My partner and I did a climb yesterday between Stone Groove and The Overleaf. We began down and left of the Overleaf and climbed up into zig-zagging cracks that are obvious from the road to the south of the dome. There are a couple of belay options for the first pitch. I went straight up for the second pitch through more discontinuous cracks to a low-angle slab with a very easy runout. The belay options for the 2nd pitch aren't great so we got creative, then traversed over a huge flake near the ... more >>

Comments: I will add my thoughts on the dog discussion that has been going on since my opinion of dogs at Shelf has recently taken a drastic turn.
On April, 26 2008 my husband and I climbed at Menses Prow. Several parties were already there with 5+ dogs belonging to multiple parties. Just before we reached the cliff 2 dogs approached and one promptly pissed right in the middle of the trail. Later while approacing the ledge for "Jumbo Pumping Love" I was overwhelmed by the smell of fresh dog poo which I ... more >>

Comments: Ok, I must have left my brain at the trailhead the day I did this climb. For those of you who are interested, here is a more detailed description of pitch one: Locate a block just left of the left-leaning, left-facing dihedral mentioned above. Scramble to the top of the block and locate several cracks. Pick a crack and go up, but not too far- you want to exit onto the ledge at about 25'. On this ledge, walk left a bit and ascend the left-facing flake. Don't go up the right-facing flake farther t... more >>

Comments: This route is listed as Whisper of Immortality in the Sharp End (blue) Shelf guide. 4 bolts to overly generous chains. Watch out for a loose block disguised as a bomber hold right at the second bolt as of 5-16-07.

Location: CO : Estes Park Valley : Big Thompson Canyon : The Monastery By: Lauren D. Hollingsworth When: May 13, 2007 | view comment >> |
Comments: I was at the Monastery with a group on the night of 5-10. There were at least 2 huge drinking parties that left plenty of garbage to piss off the neighbors. We picked up after them some, but this is the week of graduation for many, so I anticipate more of the same for this weekend (5-7&8). If you need sleep, camp in Estes Park and drive in for climbing. If you are camping, please help us pick up trash and delay the closure of this beautiful (free) place to camp!
