Comments: Fist jams to lieback, start protects well with a 3-4 inch cam. Tech face finish makes a nice finale! Can go right or left to fixed anchors once at the roof. Right variation is nice too and protects fine with thinner gear.

Comments: Great route, takes gear well, technical and physically strenuous crux. If you put in good pro before the crux, nothing to worry about, but it's heads up just enough to keep it interesting :) Roof moves are straightforward and jug-tastic, extra points for running it out to the chains!

Comments: I didn't use any gear bigger than a red camalot, even to build an anchor. Can definitely do in one pitch if you use runners and mind the rope drag. Excellent pitch, probably the best line at Phantom, one of the better 5.9's in the Tahoe area IMO. Beware when rapping, the backside station has bolt hangers with no rap rings, we rapped at dusk and then couldn't pull the rope once we got down. Next time I'm up there I'll install some proper gear unless one of you fine people beats me to it @SEMICOLO... more >>

Comments: I normally don't get into online debates, but I have to address the previous comment.

James, I have to say it grinds my gears for you to post negative commentary about the Gorge. The Earth offers us many different rock types, each of which is unique and lends itself to its own characteristic features and movement aesthetic. Not everything can be Valley Granite. The joy of rock climbing manifests in many ways: exposure, position, movement, scenery, rock quality, the aesthetic of the line, etc. a... more >>

Comments: Route name is "Quick Lick," in concert with the "Dike Wall" theme. :P

Comments: This is not a run-out climb, I did not even consider placing any pro. Should be categorized as sport, it would be a shame for someone not to get on this incredible line because they don't have trad gear.

Comments: For a comprehensive guide to this area, please refer to Mammoth Area Rock Climbs by Marty Lewis and John Moynier, Chapter 6: Reds Meadow Area, Bear Crag (pg. 135).

Marty has contributed immensely to the development of the Eastside Sierra, and even with the advent of technologies such as Mountain Project, it's important to have integrity with our values as climbers and support the people who make climbing such incredible routes possible.

Thanks to Marty Lewis, John Moynier, Peter Croft, and al... more >>

Comments: Direct start is 5.9 and heads up if you aren't solid at the grade. Well protected climb, great beginner lead. Rap from the top to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on the rope.

Comments: This route is suprisingly enjoyable! It look bland and boring from the ground, but the movement is actually quite aesthetic. Regarding grade, this is unquestionably a 5.9. I think it requires pocket pulling experience and the ability to visualize good holds over shallow useless ones, otherwise I could see how someone might feel i deserves a 10a. Well-bolted, good warmup.

Comments: This is a good line! It felt 10d to me, with a technical crux up high requiring good footwork. I put new chains on the bolted face anchors on 6/27/2012. This and solar power are both short but excellent lines.

Comments: This is a stellar crack climb for the bay area. Takes excellent, bomber pro, and has great moves. I felt like it was 10c, but that's only if you traverse right after the second bolt, climbing past a bulge. The finish is a nice hand traverse on slab, really cerebral finish! Gear to 3", many nut placements, opportunities for small TCU placements as well.

Comments: This route is sand-bagged. I was hoping to have a nice cruiser to finish the day yesterday and holy shit! This route destroyed me! The beginning sequence is bouldery, and I would say is at LEAST V2, if not V3. The top crux is at least V2 as well, so there is no way this goes at 10d. I am being tentative when I say it's 11b/c because my feet were sore and maybe it's a style of sandstone thin face climbing that I am less familiar with. But really guys, I think we're looking at 11c/d here. I think ... more >>
