Comments: Phil, this weekend was my second time too. I completely agree with you. I have worked my ass off on that roof twice now. Getting out from underneath it with the one worthless finger hold is impossible(at my skill level). I have pulled on gear both times now. I have also had my gear come out both times now. I have also decked both times now.... I emailed a moderator to encourage an update on beta for this climb. Listing it as a 5.8 half-day event is irresponsible. Casey & I went door to door from... more >>

Comments: Note that the free parking for the trail head is at the "Crags Devils Playground Trailhead".
  • Parking at the Crags Campground is limited & does require a day use fee.
The Trailhead starts at 10,000 ft, the base of the pinnacle is closer to 10,400, and the climbable rock is from 10,800 to somewhere over 11,200. Here is a rough map I made: Google Map.

Comments: I didn't see the slings at the belay station anymore. May still be at the rap station though....

Comments: A couple of things from my recent trip:
This is not 5.8 - no argument about it. I am not an amazing climber, but I can't remember falling on anything less than 5.10 is the last few years. The cracks require some crack skill to make them 5.8/5.9ish. However, when you get to the roof...it will take some more advanced moves. The pro is smaller, and the crack on the top of roof has some suspect smaller rocks in it. It held for me, but I don't know if that will always be the case. You will want smal... more >>

Comments: I had trouble finding this w/out pics... There are new bolted routes that made it a bit tough. Also, there are 2 little pine trees that can confuse things. Anyways, on the ledge from the left: There is a crack, a green stain (with one bolt), & then your pine tree. Start directly above the pine tree (not to the left of it).

Comments: We went ahead and climbed up the chicken heads to the right of the anchors to create a second pitch. Go straight up to a ledge, pull the "Mama Jugs" to gain the summit.

Comments: I did this on Friday. It was the longest & most sustained 5.10 I have ever been on. In fact, the moves above the first anchor are some of the hardest 5.10 moves I have ever pulled. Not sure if it was the length, the moves, or the exposure, but It felt like more then 5.10a

That said. AMAZING CLIMB

Comments: Completely agree with the description; wish I had seen this before this afternoon. Went to climb the N. Ridge & was beat to it. Jumped on the south ridge instead. One of the headier lead I've done. Ended with me losing a nut & my tow rope to the climb (6/10). Was getting dark & I did not want to climb it again. Drop me a note if you grab the rope & want some beer....
