Comments: dan macquade said that that crux pitch represents one of the best hand cracks in red rock... my man was ON POINT with that comment! what a thing of beauty, the movement and feature were both so amazing, this pitch has stuck with me all weekend with the lingering after-taste of a very fine, expensive steak.

the pitch is expensive as well, you will spend a considerable amount of energy! SO sustained and overhanging! i reached "throw up tired" about 140' up! so tired i got turned around on ... more >>

Comments: ha! just goes to show how subjective rock climbing can be... i thought it was over-bolted (purposely) and very safe. also felt it isn't worth the time to rope up unless you do the whole pitch, the best warm-up is in the final bulges.

i maintain! she's a good beginner climb! LOL...

seriously tho, thanks for the feedback, i'll keep in mind on future installations...

enjoy,

jon

Comments: bro, that is a great photo to post on the cactus tower descent page, it suddenly makes so much sense after doing it in the dark and seeing this picture... my notes said to just keep walking and keep angling right...

Comments: we struggled with the grade, all involved felt it was a 5.7/+. i'm against sandbagging a beginner climb so we said 5.8-. this would be a fine 1st lead at that grade.

go jump on some herbst, van betten, harrison, or smith routes before you coin the phrase "red rock 5.9"! (1st pitch of the friar is infinitely more difficult than adventure guppies and it is ranked a 5.7... birdland is harder too at 5.7+. these are the only other 5.7's i've done in the park)

happy climbing!

Comments: ha, rad sniper! i think i experienced a "clonus" during my OS attempt of the 10d crack pitch! LOL... and i get a lil' turtle-head clonus peeking out every time during the walk in to lead that first bolted pitch too!

"turtle-head clonus" = when your anus engages in violent, confused motion due to excess coffee, orange juice, and anxiety mixtures while approaching a climb you know to be difficult for you to send. (this often results in "almost" farts and/ or "almost" shits. an almost ... more >>

Comments: this offwidth is very hard, if you can send this it is official: YOU can climb offwidths! LOL i've tried it 3 times and still haven't a clue how to put it together...

cassondra's right, the 5.9 variation is killer and is a great warm-up if you've come to send the zinger

Comments: i appreciate the bolt replacement very much, thanks!

NOTES: the new anchors are often too low, with the in-line equalization you need to place them a lil' higher to avoid too much force pulling OUT on the lowest anchor bolt(reasonably so if people are clipping this at waist-height and then leaning back to belay). also consider using washers between the nut and the hangars.

i think the variables mentioned above have contributed to at least one "new" bolt pulling almost halfway out alread... more >>

Comments: approach was more involved than i thought it'd be, i should have worn approach shoes. also, there was a fixed line to gain the last part of the approach and the rope is a very thick static line. if i hit blood wall again i'll bring an ascender for the static line (which is attached to a nice new bolt)

Comments: its over after the roof (maybe 6 feet of climbing)... someone, wisely, installed a fixed anchor just above the action, i recommend using it instead of the walk-off... the anchor is better than it first seems w/ two fixed knots and a stopper. more than adequate for my 220 lb. frame as of april fool's day 2011
