Comments: Hi Phil,

Those are all nice things to consider, and it seems like you've thought about the issue awhile. So maybe you and some others can organize a meeting group, and plan some "friends of the canyon" type gatherings to discuss things? Maybe include some non-climbers too. At some point, a representative from the BLM might join, but I suspect things could work out fine without them. There is such a wide range of compromises possible. Good luck, and have fun...

Comments: Thanks Joe - I was wondering what happened to Quinn, and was hoping he was still around.

I remember seeing him at the UW climbing rock around 1980 - he always seemed excited, hyper is what we might say now, and talked in a high-pitched voice. He said that the maximum difficulty he could climb was 5.9, but then he would solo 5.9.

Comments: Myself, I'm grateful that James has done all this work to show us this area.

As far as tradition goes, I don't know who has the authority to decide what the tradition (or etiquette) is or should be for an area, but it looks to me like this area has plenty of room for both traditional climbing and sport climbing. The area I frequent isn't large (Index), and has long had a healthy coexistence of trad and sport.

Moreover, this area is rather removed from any large population center, so it is ha... more >>

Comments: Yeah, it's a fun pitch. I've done it a few times now.

You can see part of the 2nd pitch to Law and Order on the right. When cleaned up, that should be a blast as well.

Ben, you might check out the arete on Derek's right (left, from our view). It might go. At the top where it is really blunt, a crack goes up and right.

Comments: About kike's question, I am assuming it is about the outside, above the ground.

People have been doing the traverse for decades. In the late 70s, my climbing class instructor took us there to traverse. So, technically legal or not, traversing it is probably not going to be noticed.

Comments: About the tuna, do you mean this one and Dr Sniff?

I don't know if the similarity is a coincidence or not. I had nothing to do with either name. Bobcats, on the other hand, is definitely an Index theme...

Comments: Seeing the orientation, it looks like it would be good for a morning climb in the cooler months and good as an evening climb in the summer.

It's hard to beat the easy access.

Comments: Great job Ben!

For decades, I have looked over at the upper part of this route and imagined doing the moves. But hearing about Greg Olsen working on it a long time ago make me think it was way too hard, so I never ventured. Still is probably too hard for me, but it helps to know it now goes.

I never thought about the lower half. That part looks fun too.

And the formation it is on seems to have other good possible routes.

The star rating I gave it came from the rcnw forum.

Comments: I wouldn't say invalid, as I can imagine TRing a highball boulder problem like this and calling it an ascent.

It might be more bold with only one pad though.

Did the "sword" name predate the FA by Larry Petterman? If not, we should correct the name.

Comments: I like the video. Great climbing and camerawork.

The upper finger crack looks really nice. Makes me want to get up there.

Please get a video of Keith's Crack -- I want to go do that one too (but might need some beta)!
