Location: NV : Red Rock : Red Rock Rendezvous 2013 - ... By: John Hegyes When: Mar 15, 2013 | view comment >> |
Comments: I was under the impression that BLM has cracked down on large groups like Meetup. A search found this link from 2010. New hike restrictions at Red Rock Not a ban but a permitting requirement and a cap of 20 people per hike. I don't know if this is up to date. I'm fine with such restrictions, Red Rock is being abused by groups such as Meet Up and the Rendezvous. As far as the Marathon, that is confined to the road, or does it go on the... more >>

Location: NV : Red Rock : Red Rock Rendezvous 2013 - ... By: John Hegyes When: Mar 10, 2013 | view comment >> |
Comments: I second Jon's complaints. It's beyond my comprehension why the BLM would allow such a high-impact event to repeatedly occur in Red Rock. His remarks about how we squabble over such small activities such as the placement of a single bolt, and about how small groups such as Meetup are banned from Red Rock are right on target. Red Rock is suffering seriously from over-popularity. Can the Rendezvous give it a rest for a couple years and maybe hold this event elsewhere? Red Rock Canyon suffers in co... more >>

Location: NV : Red Rock : Juniper Canyon : Brownstone Wall : Sweet Thin (5.9) By: John Hegyes When: Nov 24, 2012 | view comment >> |
Comments: We climbed the first two pitches of Mayday Malefactor rather than the Armatron start. This is a faster way to go, two pitches of MM gets you to the same place as three or four pitches via the Armatron start. I found the second pitch of MM to be a little run out between bolts; this face section was the crux of the day for me. By climbing the MM start we didn't need the wide gear until the upper chimney of Sweet Thin. I would have appreciated a pair of #4s but I just walked up the... more >>

Comments: I thought the section at the top of p2 was the crux. We linked the two pitches with a 60m rope but we needed to simulclimb for about the last 20 feet. We did a single rappel of the route with a pair of 60m ropes. Both pitches felt like 5.8 to me.

Comments: I've climbed it both ways now. I've cut right at the mid-way tree up the flake. I've also climbed straight up the corner. I think the corner is the way to go, more pure, but pro is hard to get. Definitly bring thin gear. I used two Lowe Balls. Bring #3 to #4 Camalots for the anchor.

Comments: To familiarize yourself with the Epi descent, climb Frogland first. The lower third of the Epi descent is the same as the Frogland descent. If you climb Frogland first, you might have a shot at learning the lay of the land before you go for the big one.

Comments: Great route, thanks for putting it up. I wouldn't have bothered spraypainting the hangers. I'd rather see a line of shiny bolts than a bunch of paint on the rock.

Comments: We did not use anything bigger than a 0.75 Camalot. With a 60 meter rope, we were able to link pitches 4 and 5 to Humerus Ledge. We were on route from about 11am to 3pm and we were in the sun the entire time, not bad for December 27, with the sun just about as low in the sky as it gets all year.
