Comments: Having finally gotten the bravery up to do this problem, I have to say that The Thanksgiver is one of the best boulder problems in the area. This would be a great problem anywhere.

Comments: This always felt hard for the grade. I think it's a lot harder than the other 13c's in the area (though there aren't that many of that grade, surprisingly). Whoever shot the video of Boogieman called it 13d, and I wouldn't really argue.

Comments: Thanks man! With the Davis Boulders, Dickey Ledge, and Sandwich Notch, there's a good bit of climbing to be done in the Waterville Area. Such a great alternative to the Rumney craziness.

Comments: Yup, we did get some bouldering done. As soon as the afternoon clouds rolled in, it got really cold though.

Comments: Ha! Glad you got the reference. I was going to call it the Presidential Now-Cast Boulder, but I thought that would just be too nerdy.

Comments: After reading Ryan's comments about this area, I went to have a look to see for myself. He was right--this area has amazing potential for bouldering. Along with some friends, Kayte and I have put up about forty problems so far and it feels like we have not scratched the surface.

The Davis Boulders and Goodrich Rock might become a Central NH bouldering destination. The best comparator might be Pawtuckaway because the rock is similar. Some have remarked that this area is better than Blair Woods. ... more >>

Comments: I rewrote the description above so that it refers more generally to the whole Waterville area. Bradley, I took your description, which seemed like it was mostly related to Cone Head, and added all of it as a comment under Cone Head Mountain.

Comments: Here is more info from Bradley White:

On your way to Waterville Valley there is an area that encompasses Cone Head Mt. (private property) Two pitches of lichen and dirt slab/face schist and outside corners. One ice climbing gully. Dicky Slab a two pitch friction slab west from Welch Mt. and the the Acteon Range across route 49 from Welch Mt. The last peak east of the range has bolted routes up it now. In Waterville Valley is Noon peak a 150ft stacked giant block ledge with two crack climbs.

Comments: FWIW, I have always used the beta that Otey displays in the video above. That beta was passed down to me from Ward Smith, and I have tried to pass it along to anyone who would listen. (Yeah, I'm THAT guy.) Ward said that if you're 5'10" and above, you should use the beta; those under that height use the high right foot.

With the lunge beta, it's so cool to hit that upper hold at the perfect deadpoint moment. It takes precision and timing, not just strength. I guess that's why I alway... more >>

Comments: Well, whatever's going on, I think Waterville needs a better description than what's above, as the above description refers directly to Cone Head Mountain, and not Waterville as a general area. Bradley, what if we integrate your description above into Cone Head? Someone then should write up a description of Waterville in general.

Comments: I wasn't really a fan of this climb. I thought the start felt a bit loose. The mid-route face moves were cool, but I wasn't too psyched about the rockaneering from the last bolt to the top.

Comments: I wouldn't really call it R. The start is bolted, and the second half has pretty good gear. There are a few moves past the piton that were a bit heady, but that's just because I didn't really trust the piton, which is a knifeblade in a horizontal. But the moves past the pin were relatively easy, maybe 5.6. Generally, I'd say this route is pretty well protected, with work. If 5.8 was my lead limit, I'd maybe want to TR it once before leading it.

Comments: What a great route! Perfect rock, fun moves, good (but spaced) gear throughout. This is definitely a central NH classic.
