Comments: Repeated one of the above-listed variations to this direct start today; we started by heading straight up past two bolts and then traversing to the left. Done this way the route has a couple of moves in the 10 to 10+ range. It is difficult to protect the second on the traverse unless you have a couple of tricks in your bag.

Two old bolts still need to be pulled and filled. Please try to re-use old holes when replacing bolts; these 1/4" buttonheads could have easily been... more >>

Comments: Thanks Clay for the great belay and for leading pitches 1&3 so I could get psyched for pitch 4! You rock man.

Thanks to Dave Merin who replaced the hardware on pitches 1&3.

Comments: Hey Scott, I must agree that self drives are pretty darn solid for how shallow the hole is. I figured I'd swap them while I was there due to their leeper hangers and their age. One of those was the only protection for a long section of slab at the top of pitch 4, where a bolt failure would be disasterous. :)

Comments: Hahaha thanks Daryl!! We still have to clean up pitch one - there is a some dirt and kitty litter on it, but I think it can be cleaned up really well. Otherwise the climb is in prime shape now.

Comments: Peter,

The guidebook was printed in 1997. In 2003 there was a huge fire that killed a bunch of trees. I think this area was part of what was burned, hence the multitude of dead trees.

I agree it would be nice if this area were subdivided and reorganized, though. Edit: reorganized on MP, that is.

Comments: I felt like there were two crux sections on this climb, the first about a third of the way up before working over to the arete, and the second about two thirds of the way up on the buttress. A few rests can be found on this route; I found it useful to take advantage of them. Great exposure.

Comments: This climb is fantastic, and certainly a classic test piece.

Pitch 1 feels a little harder than 10+ to me at its crux. It's about 70 feet.

Pitch 2 is excellent and very committing. We did the right hand variation (the hanging corner); plan on solid 10 well above your gear. Once at the top of the corner you must traverse left approx 20 feet left to rejoin the route at two bolts. From here the anchor is more or less 60 feet above you, but some movement to the right and left is need... more >>

Comments: To add to the directions, you can use the link below for an overhead view of the approach in Google Earth. The overhead shows the commonly-used approach to Neptune. The return trip has a bit of a punch, there is an 1100 foot elevation gain.

Comments: This climb is terriffic. The opening crux described above is outrageous, and the remaining climbing will keep your attention through three more very difficult slab sections.

Keep a black alien and a green alien (or equivalent) for the top.

A bee stung me during my second attempt. I managed to get the stinger out on stance and then fell. :)

Comments: That's too bad, John. I would think those guys would be psyched to have you sorting all this stuff out. That would save them a lot of work and would be helpful to the rest of us, too.

I'm glad that one of the admins sorted this area based on your post, though.
