Comments: Lots of routes opening up with the cold spell. Haflin Creek is in, both lower and upper. The latter being huge. Cascade is in. The Itch is on its way...1st pitch isn't quite there yet. East Animas is even looking good. Buena Suerte.Eddy

Comments: Was on this route 10-10-05. I was cleaning the route on the way down and the fourth bolt hanger came off in my hands. This is valuable pro, as it protects the crux. Jennifer, my belayer, saw the washer and nut fall as I passed the bolt on lead but thought they were pebbles. Nut, washer and hanger are now resting on a small but prominent ledge at the base of the climb (I didn't have a wrench). If you're headed to this area, please bring a wrench and reattach the hanger. This is a very sweet route... more >>

Comments: Climbed in Ouray Ice Park on Mar. 12-13. Conditions were excellent, with a few minor annoyances. The ice was in hero conditions....a little wet, but it's springtime....no? We stumbled into "International Womens' Weekend" so...well... a little high on the estrogen levels. Ice in the sun is degenerating quickly, but nighttime low temps are refurbishing routes nicely. Head out early in the morn. Schoolroom is bomber, and the mixed route just downstream of the Schoolroom Pillar was deluxe. The river... more >>

Comments: Yea...I don't know if these flows have names. They form regularly and are consistent in their difficulty and morphology. I was just refering to this section as "Main Flows" to distinguish them from the mixed stuff on the north side of the canyon. Cheers.

Comments: Thanks Theo. The area along the tall cliff band on the south side of the canyon, at the foot of the lower pool, is really what I meant when I wrote "Main Flows". This includes all of what is pictured up to this point. Cheers....Eddy

Comments: Climbed 2nd Gully on Sat., 11-20. Ice was quite healthy with only a few thin spots. Upper portion of route wet and soft (a result of a very late start), but firmed up nicely on the crepuscular descent.Stairway looked thin but doable, Highway to Hell likewise. Hosers' coming along. Bad Ass Pencil, Eureka Gulch and the like not there yet. Avalanche danger was non-existant but ther is an avalanche warning in effect for the San Juans as I write, due to recent storm activity. Cheers.

Comments: Drove into Lincoln Falls area on Mon. Oct. 11 with hopes of early season sticks. The falls are coming in nicely with curtains starting to form on the right, up high and the left-side gully filling in. Warm temps (~50's) and thoughts of pulling large quantities of ice down on our heads kept us off the routes...barely. Should be looking good in a couple more weeks.

Comments: Eureka, on 11-9-03, was looking very promisinig. In fact, Stairway is in, albeit thin and spooky on the first pitch. Above it was healthy and blue.Avalanche danger in the canyon was nil with ~6" of wet on the approach. However I'm sure this is changing as I am reporting. Hoses are starting to form and others are coming in nicely. Way ahead of the Ouray area.

Comments: Ice in the park was beautiful during the Ice Festival (Jan 17-20) but the hordes were ungodly. Some very questionable pro, anchors, tecnique being employed. Actually saw one belayer get knocked-out cold in the scoolroom by falling ice. Spooky! As of Feb1 ice in South Park was very plastic but got so warm that it was extremely wet and there was a little icefall in the north end that made me choose to move on. The afternoon of Feb 2 brought snow, cold and bitchin ice back to the park. The lower go... more >>
