Comments: How did Osman climb that rock in flip flops to begin with? He seemed just to float up some of his routes. AWESOME !!

Comments: Todd Skinner was truly an inspiring climber for me growing up. His climbs were made from a deep passion for our sport and life itself.

Comments: Dan Osman was fearless solo climber with a strong core to pull off this move and NO rope to save him if he hold let go. Truly a legend.

Comments: Loved to solo this at sunset, but it's harder than 5.7 sandbagger rating back in the day. When you're 30 feet off the deck and you realize that you committed yourself to this free climb, you're focused like a fiend. Didn't want to start "The Elvis" and peel off. Much relief at the summit by the old cables with the orange sunset. A memory etched in my mind forever. Felt a rush of adrenaline in my veins after that climb that got me hooked on climbing for life.

Comments: Does anyone have some photos to add here from the summit?
or a video..?

Last time here (Sept. 2009), I had NO rope and wanted to climb to the top by myself as well...if I had to climb this route with my small Sony Handycam...the hand strap would be held with my teeth...!!not a good idea...so I bailed out just before I got to the top!!

Back in "the day", Albert Ellingwood did it around 1925,
and this was the hardest climb in Colorado.
Agnes Ville did it as well...(later died coming down Long's ... more >>

Comments: Did a solo of this route a few times in the summer of 2009...but had to "bail out" just below you climb out from the top...I had NO rope and didn't want to risk a down climb with no rope.
Now down here in Australia and wished I did the full climb to the top.

Comments: Still waiting for some "new" photos from the top.
Going to try to take my video cam up there when the sun finally comes out...with all the recent snow, the approach might be long and wet...but someone must have some photos to post here??

Comments: Hello,

Has anyone here reading these comments know if you can climb The Ellingwood Chimney route (5.8) free with NO rope..? I climbed into the Chimney last Sept (9-09) to right below the roof and was by myself. I didn't want to squeeze up thru the crack to the top if I needed a rope to get back down. I have read some old stories that Albert Ellingwood downclimbed the whole route..? ! ? The summit views up there look awesome and I would drag up my video camera as well..

If anyone has any Beta a... more >>

Comments: I have sent many letter to the Access Fund in Boulder to contact Keith Rye, 16330 South Elk Creek Road about this access issues to The Sphinx Rock. They have told me he will NOT even answer their letters! They wanted me to ask Rye why he prohibits climbing on his land: is he concerned with liability, trash, parking, or privacy? They also wanted to find out if Rye is interested in selling the parcel, that he bought back in July of 2006?
All I know is this so called land-owner doesn't own the car ... more >>

Comments: I want to ask this so called land owner? just why are you so pissed off to begin with? I have climbed here for the past 10 years with no problems, then around Oct. 2005 me & my wife seen about 10 posted signs saying Private Property & No Trespassing for about 500 years in both directions of this beautiful rock. It seems to me that since you yourself have destroyed pullouts along the road with Trash (old iron boiler, dead trees & stumps, huge rocks..etc)...and this same homeowner did cut off most... more >>

Comments: I think it's time that each and everyone of us voice our concern to The Access Fund and try to open Sphinx Rock again!
I have a lot of good memories from climbing down there for over 10 years. About 2 years ago my wife and I bought a cabin in the local area and were sadded to find this whole area closed by the "new homeowner". He has blocked off most of the car pullouts with dead trees and "trash"...(an old iron boiler)...has put up signs for 500 yards up and down the road.
What makes me wonder ... more >>
